black and white. This is the first time I used the B&W setting in my camera,
opting to desaturate if that seemed appropriate. By going B&W it made me think B&W.

1. Good results. Did they need much nudging in post or are these
more or less out of the camera?

I was reading a debate on http://digital-photography-school.com about shooting in black & white versus color with conversion in post. Both sides had some pretty passionate adherents. These help bolster the argument in favor of shooting in b&w.

2. thanks. It was a dark day, so all I needed was to tweak while balance
minor curve changes and sharpening where needed. A light touch was all that was needed, and mostly to suit my personal preferences. Sepia was added to one to bring out the tree in the toilet.

The biggest benefit to shooting black and white is to make you think in black and white.

12. They turned out splendidly.
I have yet to try this myself, but I think I'll have to.

4. How does the b&w setting work?
Does it remove all the colour or do you have the option of retaining the colour if you want? Sorry if that's a stupid question, but I've never tried that setting. There's definitely advantages to seeing in b&w given the greater impact that b&w photography can have sometimes.

I like the tree in the toilet, btw. Is this a garden?

5. I don't know how they do it. It shows B&W in the LCD, so
it is probably has to do with what raw data it selects from the sensor.

Are you using a Canon? If you are, it is in the "My Colors Settings." (Func Set)

BTW, I watched the Today show and in one segment Ann Curry was carrying a Leica M9. She's got good taste in cameras and the money to satisfy that taste.

10. One camera has b&w film in it
The other is a Nikon dslr. Oh hey, I just found the settings for b&w. Different menu than Canon, but thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll have to compare it with desaturating post. Thinking in b&w is probably a good skill to develop.

btw, wish I had a Leica too.

11. I'd like to see if she does that camera justice. There's
so much more I need to learn about this camera.

6. When I feel the need to go old school I just go old school and shoot film.
It refocuses the the way you shoot especially if you find yourself filling up an 8 gig card in a day.

7. I'm thinking about going old school for a bit, but film is
expensive and finding someone who does black and white is getting harder to find.

8. I'm lucky with that one
I have this great seriously old school camera store 2 blocks from my house that does black & white processing for 35mm, and medium format film and I have a film scanner.

9. I do have a Canon SLR I haven't used for a long time.
The last film I used was some Ilford B&W.

I am thinking of buying an old twin lens reflex for medium format work. I had a Yashica D and I wish I still had it.
