Critiques and comments needed.
I missed the recent discussion on critiques. Thought I'd toss this one out here and see if anyone can give some pro or con opinions. I'm happy with this photo, but I really can't explain why, which probably means it's not as successful as I thought it was.;-)

1. It tells a story. She's in the winter of her years, she's
reached her peak, and is now on the down side of the mountain. She is heading toward her sunset. She's going against the oncoming traffic, and there's a red light ahead. Most of all, she's on the journey alone.

2. I would have cropped it just to the right of the pole
While it's a strong image now, it would be stronger with the crop because it gives a stronger sense of solitude, which is what this image conveys

3. I agree with Carlos here... the street does little for the image
without it, it speaks louder

4. The colors here are great!
The colors are either neutral, or in the warm ranges--reds and oranges, but it doesn't look contrived. It is as if the scene matches the tones of the sky at dusk. That is the first thing I noticed about the photo. There are only two tiny dots of blue on the poster. How interesting!

I don't think I would have thought of cropping it to the right of the telephone poll, but it would seem to make sense. I do kind of like the effect of all the cars being stopped at the light. So, I would say leave enough to the right of the telephone poll to show that. It's a little hard to tell where it should be cropped until you try it.

5. My crop
would keep every bit of all on the right, come to the top of the red of the "red" light, take the bottom off almost to the left line of snow on the sidewalk, and take off the whole right side to a little of the left of the vertical piece of wrought iron going down.

To me this is not about solitude, it's about how she maneuvers the best she can.

I like the photo a lot, all it needs is to lose some of the extra peripherals.
It also makes me so very grateful.

6. I like it and here's why
I like the lines of the poles and light posts. I like the fact she is on a scooter and headed away from us. So we can wonder what she looks like etc.The poster in the distance gives some perspective. I'm also a fan of ruthless cropping. It seems, to me, the shot would be better by slicing off most of the left side, say to about where that stair rail is... :)

7. see, I like the snow and the stairs
more than the street. It speaks to the impossibility of her getting in those houses to me.

8. Good Journalistic Photo
Ordinarily I'm loathe to have the subject centered like this, but because the DOF is so narrowly on her, and because that particular shade of red stands out, singularly, you get away with it.

9. I love this photo
It says so much. And I wouldn't crop it. The only thing I would do is blur the poster a bit more–just a touch. Or maybe desaturate it a bit.

11. Thanks, folks. That's why I love this group.
I'm going to experiment with various crops along the lines people have suggested, and post the results.

12. Realize please...
where I say "the whole right side to the wrought iron post..." I meant to say "left".
I had stolen some of WJMS's rum just before I said that.

I was having some non-rum-induced confusion about that.

14. If you try to follow everyone's advice here
About all you'll have is the sidewalk!

unless I am misinterpreting...........

Have fun, and then be sure to run a poll. I'm so into polls in this place apparently I now spell pole "poll."!!

15. Personally
I would have stepped into the street and taken the shot at that angle, you get more of the winter feel and eliminate the poles and the cars which I find a bit distracting.

17. Good idea
but I wasn't carrying a zoom and even moving a few feet and focusing would have allowed her to get too far away. She was moving fast.

19. If I were to crop this
I would crop out about an inch off the right and an inch off the bottom - keeping all the cars and the bottom of the stairway. That brings the woman somewhat off-center and a bit closer in the picture plane.

It's a terrific photo with lots of archetypes - winter, the stop light, going against traffic, manuevering through the obstacles of winter, the sun setting. Okay, I'll shut up now.

22. I like that, I think
I want all the cars, too! (oh and all that other stuff you said). I was trying to say something like that, but really didn't think of taking a bit off the bottom.
