*cough* ...question...
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 11:54 AM by Adsos Letter
I'm purchasing a camera for youngest daughter's birthday. I have been looking through B&H's web page, and been happy with the amount of information they give for equipment. :)

Have any of you shopped through B&H? I've noticed some of the cameras I'm looking at may be had for less at other sites. Do you think going through B&H provides enough positives to offset some higher costs?

I'm missing a chip in my brain when it comes to comparison shopping, among other things... :D

1. Well if you are looking for a problem free transaction then go with B&H
There are a lot of places claiming to have cheaper prices but after you put in the order be prepared for the telephone call where they try to upsell you with guarantees and accessories or tell you it's not in stock then bait and switch you. Fortunately I'm lucky that I live in NYC and shop there fairly regularly and I've never had a bad experience.

2. Thankyou; I would much rather pay a slightly higher price
if headaches are bypassed.

Thanks, Stevenmarc! :fistbump:

And do you ever think it will stop raining around here?

11. Rain!
I've been trying to get a lawn repaired and leveled for two months. It finally stopped raining long enough this week to do it.

Wrists/hands: I'm in the final stages of rehab after surgery to give my left hand more mobility. Pure hell stretching out those tendons, but it's an improvement.

you doing that lawn work yourself, or do you have help?

And it's lookin' like it's about to start raining again as I type this. :(

22. I is the stupervisor. No dirty hands for me.
So, now with rain threatening again, the "lawn" sits there with all the nice new (leveled) fill waiting for the sod to be reinstalled and – get this– we can't get the same kind of sod to fill in spaces I bought two years ago. They don't grow it any more. Ach!

4. I've never had a problem with B&H

and usually find them cheaper than other if I am comparing US market cameras. Some places might be cheaper and say they have a US warranty but the camera is made for Europe, Japan or even Canada and is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty in the US. This can bite you should it break but also for software updates. Something else to watch out for if you go elsewhere.

7. Thanks, CC! Those are all things I wouldn't have thought of.
B&H's prices seem right in line with what the models offered at COSTCO run for, and COSTCO stuff is usually less than market retail.

I was slowly being drawn to lower priced places like the moth to the proverbial flame... :D

Thanks to the photo group I will avoid that particular flame. :hi:

5. I have bought about a million dollars
of stuff through B&H over the past 25 years. It is the only place to get stuff in NYC anymore, the others being long gone and Adorama having become thieves.

8. Thanks, WJMS! Since we are only about 40 minutes from San Francisco
I may try to find a similar place in The City; if not, then B&H it is.

9. We LOVE B&H
We don't buy from anyone else. When I received my 5D with a messed up mirror, they replaced it, no questions asked. They're always fast and very reliable.

14. Thanks, Blue! The general opinion of the group has sold me on B&H
I'm going to find the most comprehensive shop in The City (SF)so Kendall can do some hands-on comparing, but I think I'll order from B&H (unless Wolfe's is still in San Francisco; they might be comparable, but I haven't shopped there in years)

Don't hesitate about posting your daughter's shots of Aiman; he looks like a sweetie, and lots of us enjoy posting pics of our kids/grandkids. :hi:

What great endorsements for B&H! Could a lazy DU'er get a link from someone to B&H so he knows he's at the right place? :)

15. Thanks, hippywife! The overall consensus runs in B&H's favor, it seems
When Kendall gets home from university next week I will take her to a large camera shop in San Francisco, so she can get some hands-on feel for the cameras; but, unless they can beat B&H all around, then I think I'll purchase through B&H. :hi:

24. That is a really good idea.
Let her hold them and see how they feel in her hands and then give the purchase to the pros.

One thing about B&H though is that they are closed for all Jewish holidays so there are times that you won't be able to contact them, sometimes for several days.

I don't think you will be at all sorry. :hi:

17. 15 years of trouble free orders at B&H here.
When we used to have camera stores in the area I bought my bodies locally. For the lenses I couldn't really afford, I always turned to B&H. Their prices were significantly better and they came highly recommended by all the pros I knew.

a couple of the Lumix models, and the canon G-11 still looks good.

Still looking; definitely want the 4/3 feature.

28. How old is your daughter? 4/3 will give better low light
performance than the small P&S sensor. But outdoors and in good light, you can still get excellent images.

I'm happy with my G10, but I wouldn't mind going up to a 4/3 like the Lumix GF1. Price is a sticking point for this retiree.

The Olympus PL1 is in your price range. Lens selection is small with the 4/3. The PL1 comes with a choice of two lenses, choose carefully.
