Not a bee.
Edited on Sun Aug-08-10 01:22 AM by CC
Looks like a bee/moth cross, flies like a bee or a hummingbird. What is it?

Could you just hold still for a couple seconds...

A Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird Moth

And some butterflies...

Not very many this color this year so far.

tattered but still thriving...

Some are plainer than others but still beautiful.

Don't forget to look up too.

A little bug with wings in a little flower...

A hummingbird guarding...

his feeder.

and last but not least of the winged, A BEE. :)

Poor little worker bee is a hugging that flower to get that pollen.

A milk can for Mira.

With thanks to Callalily for giving me the idea for the title.
As active as the garden has gotten I will never get the weeding done. The fliers seems to of been slow arriving this year but they are here in droves now. Barely made it off the porch for these. Next week hoping to make it to the sailboat races and get some photos of sailboats.

1. Fabulous, fabulous photos!
I'm clueless about your critter in the first couple shots, but it's amazing that you got that wing action too.

Great butterfly photos too, especially photo #10.

And most importantly - I LOVE your bee picture! ;-)

Glad that you have an active garden and that you are sharing your critters with us. Taking photos is far more important than weeding. ;-)

5. On the moth I had
finally gotten a photo I could use to identify it, he he a Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird Moth. I hid the name below the shots of it. It does not stay still at all. Move faster and more than bees or butterflies and does not rest for a second like a hummingbird does.

7. Yes he is though a bit smaller
and has the clear wings. Got it down being a Snowberry Clearwing. Oh and found out their coloring can be different, some are more red brown. There are dozens out there at the white butterfly bush. We used to get one or two of the bigger ones that looked just like a ruby throated hummingbird but never stayed long enough to even think about getting a photo. I'll have to find somewhere to plant a patch of Bee Balm.

8. The little male hummingbird sits
in the tree just outside my kitchen window guarding "his" feeder from intruders. This time of year we have what I call the hummingbird wars. For a week or two 2 to 4 females will tolerate each other and share the feeder for a few minutes but the males won't. The little guy that has claimed the feeder then gets upset, comes and sits on the tree branch and waits for one to show up. Then he chases them off. The girls just vary their times so they do get to eat from it. It is fun to watch while eating and has caused dinners to last a couple hours.

the camera handy. Going to try to keep it closer all the time again. Now to relearn how to type. :hi:

13. Wow! What beauties!
I saw what must have been in those first shots in my MIL's backyard Saturday. They would not hold still or slow down to get a good look at them. And the white moth photo is beautiful!

That first little hummingbird looks like he is so alone and waiting for someone to come along.

Great shots...every one! :hi:

14. Those hummingbird moths
Edited on Mon Aug-09-10 11:07 PM by CC
don't stop or slow down. Took me a couple weeks to get a half decent picture to look them up. They are great pollinators though, have to be since they don't stop. Tempted to see if they are going all night on the moon flowers.

All three shots are the same hummingbird. He really does sit around most of the evening guarding that feeder. Usually he is on a branch that leaves me getting nothing but a silhouette. As to the rest of the day I'm not sure since I have to do something besides sit at the kitchen table all day. We have lost hours watching them. :)

TY:hi: Still hoping to make the sailboat races Thurs. Hoping it doesn't rain and call them off again this week.

16. These are wondrous. I'm so happy you are back into lugging your camera,
we all benefit greatly.
I see so much exquisite care in your work, especially I learn about cropping from you and about perfection when it comes to handling depth of field perfectly controlled.
Thank you for "my" milk can.
Love it.
If possible I will reciprocate, maybe with a new and different bird feeder...

I went back twice now to count my favorites, and I keep losing my place, because I want to literally expound on every one of them.
Now, I'll try again.

the birds and then the bees

I think you get it, I love them all.

thank you CC

17. The birds and the bees
Or not bees!

I can't even do bird IDs, much less bug IDs. These are great pics! Thanks.
