Under the new Oakland SF Bay Bridge
Took these last weekend when we had a good day to be out on the bay. We went under the construction of the new bridge.

This part is almost finsihed. The scaffolding will come down when it's done. That will probably take quite a while.

Looking up at some of the scaffolding. That ladder would be quite a challenge to climb.

This is directly under the new bridge. The old bridge, which is the one we use now, is on the right.

Looking in the opposite direction towards SF and the other half of the bay bridge which doesn't need to be replaced.

1. Thank you for those.
I was wondering what the new spans looked like, and you just showed me!

For some reason, I was always uncomfortable driving on the Oakland Bay Bridge. Have no idea why.
( we left the Bay area in 05)

2. Lots of us are...
Since the earthquake in '89 when part of it collapsed it's needed to be replaced. It will be completed sometime in 2013.

It should be quite spectacular when it's completed. They are starting to work on the suspension tower but have a ways to go on that.

3. Good god! There's a new bridge?
Shows you how long it's been since I've been down there.

5. Nice photos, but I'm upset about the parts from China
My father worked on the original one. He was a steelworker, he got out just in time to get a pension, although he's worried about how secure it is now. He's livid about the loss of our steel industry. Can't say I blame him. BTW my grandfather worked on the Golden Gate.

6. That was
my husband's thought when we were going under the bridge. It really irked him that all the steel for the scaffolding was from China and would probably go back to China when the bridge was done.
