I think I have a way to figure it out so I can get this to her parents. I think they may like to have it.

1. I love this photo so much.
I only wish it had been shot in RAW and some of the highlight clipping could have been recovered in post. It's quite clear how beautiful the lighting was on that face when the photo was made, but its absence in the end result hurts somehow. I don't dislike high-key photos per se, but I think this splendid portrait is not suited to having the dynamic range of the shot bifurcated so radically.

Sorry to sound like a whiner. What I really want to get across is that I love this shot and I think it's hugely successful. I just don't like all the burned out highs. They don't do this wonderful photograph any justice.

2. Hmmmm - when I grow up I might understand your suggestions better.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-11 01:57 AM by Mira
I think I'll go back and take it to its origins before I tweaked it in picasa, and see if simpler works.
I'll post it
(nice to see you JeffR)

adding simpler

crop is different, but I did not like the puce green in her jacket that is mostly why I converted to b/w because I thought it made her face look sickly, but now that I look at it again, it reflects in her green eyes.

Other than that, it's the best I can make it. But I'm glad you liked some of it
:)

6. Agree - I have a visceral reaction
against clipped whites that have no detail.

3. I like it
As per Jeff R's thoughts I grabbed it and tweaked it - sorry just couldn't resist.

Edited on Sat Feb-05-11 10:22 AM by WannaJumpMyScooter
but mute the greens a bit

this was just a quckie... might have gone too far with the face tones, but you get the idea

5. Thanks for the attention - all of you.
My understanding is that in the original I revved up the contrast too much.
So I got the color back in, and sure enough that was softer and fine just like it was.

I very much like that Johnny preserved that softness in a black and white version.
It's my favorite version and if I find the parents, I'll give them that one.

You also made it kinder and gentler, WJMS.

I happened upon her at a local art exhibit, and loved how her hair streamed over the coat.

7.  The hand holding what appears to be a candy
adds innocence to the child, but the darkness under her eyes adds pathos.

Nice capture.

12. She's kind of absent-mindedly eating. It might be the only
thing that really interests her there.

9. glad you said that
Darkness under the eyes indicates an adrenal/allergy problem. Difficult for me to look at this photo, not for any aesthetic artistic reason. The only thing that smacks me in the face is THIS CHILD SHOULD NOT BE EATING THIS. She seems addicted to sugar.

Sorry, I know this is the photography forum so I will shut up now.

10. Okay gang, this is why I truly enjoy
this photo group. Mira posted a pic, discussions ensured (terminology from (ahem) the lounge), suggestions (and boldly in the form of photo manipulations) occurred. But to be honest here, I have learned so much from Mira's posting and those who graciously offered their expertise.

Thank you all who commented and added to this discussion.

From this post alone, I have learned.

Though I think this is inferior to what others have done:

20. Don't say that...
I think your's is better than mine actually - its sharper and has better detail. All of us are seeing this different ways and I think its wonderful that we can see the same image and visualize it each in our own unique way.

14. what a haunting picture
this girl and the photo are facinating... and as others have taken liberty... I delight in the various interpretations and ways of looking at things... it is difficult to overcome the intense shadow on her face and it may be best to just use it to your advantage...

16. I think they are shadows, and I like this
but I went a little more subtle. The green is not flattering, that is why they use it for "green screens"

I think losing some of the shadow under the eyes helps. YMMV

17. You took it into the ethereal, she looks like a elf. With the green not bothersome, and the
shadows gone under the eyes, she now looks how she made me feel when I saw her. The hair and the eyes are way more beautiful as well.
Very nice work, WJMS.

21. well, for one thing, she is beautiful
there is no denying that.

and the light is classic Rembrandt light, just a little harsh under the eyes for some reason... head angled? who knows

but once you soften those shadows, the nose shadow is much more obvious, and is classic

what I did was soften the skin a bit, and another layer very similar to handmade34's, I only kept the eyes and chocolate from, then some dodging and burning here and there in the hair, desat the green

that's about it.

22. As a mostly non camera person, I found this fascinating
seeing thru other people's eyes, how others tweaked the photo, etc.
I hope there will be more threads like this, I learned a lot and I rarely shoot, much less play with tweaking.
Very interesting.
and that is one very beautiful child.

23. We have a winner. WJMS has graciously taken the photo as it came out of my camera
and turned it into something I will treasure, and so will her family. He just sent me the finished file.
For us here it's been a fascinating interactive exercise, and maybe I learned a little bit for next time.

Thank you WannaJump - you turned it into what could be hanging as an oil painting in a gallery of huge old canvases, and thank you also, JeffR and Tabatha, it would not have happened without your critiques.
