After a week of involvement with the April Theme I suspect we would all benefit
each in our own way
from again studying the work in this link.

http://www.google.com/images?q=NEGATIVE+SPACE+IN+PHOTOGRAPHY&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ce6XTfqGFMuztwfR3NyXDA&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1260&bih=611

I plan to do so too, because just in looking at some of it as I went "to get the link" I realize my perceptions have subtly changed and gotten more varied than before.

As I've said before, I think this is a subject for growth in our work.
The negative space having a shape and power of its own is important. The size of it is determined in the eye of the photographer, on whether the negative space supports the positive, or vice versa, because either is fine.

When I squint at a photo and have in mind making an assessment of it along those lines the answers come.

1. Thanks, Mira. This is proving to be a tough one for me...
not sure if I will enter anything. That being said, it's a great opportunity to stretch my mind by learning something new and challenging. That's always fun :) . It's defiantly something I intend to keep working on.

3. I have a couple lined up. I might go with the weird/ugly instead
of the beautiful because of the Golden Mean.

4. The link you provided
is most helpful. I've been concentrating on indoor shots simply because weather has been just too nasty here.

But there are some stunning outdoor shots listed, and frankly, some VERY stunning outdoor shots in other posts.

5. Thanks Mira!
This helps. After looking at these I think I am changing my entry to one that is more minimalist. Unfortunately, during this time period, I don't have much time to experiment, but will attempt it if I can. However, my archives can come to the rescue.

I appreciate all help! Generally I am not much of a minimalist but it has been fun at least going through my archives and finding minimalist photos that also have negative spaces.

Way too much going on around here now to expect to outdo my archives, but that is the way the cookie crumbles. I'll be trying to learn in a more hands off way.

7. An example of the old adage is unfolding a bit:
"Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions"

After this all of us to varying degrees will have learned to see some things anew.
Our photos in general will benefit, their horizons and variables will expand (or contract:)).
