Bats in the belfry..
Well, not exactly the belfry but we have a small colony of bats living in the gable vent to our two story storage building for quite a few summers now, we consider them a natural insect control method and leave them strictly alone.

There's screen wire inside the vent so they can't get in the building proper, they hang onto the screen wire to sleep.

I got this shot by climbing up a ladder and turning my flash and exposure all the way up.

1. Oh. My.
They almost look sprayed on the way they have plastered themselves to the screen.

We have a lot of bats where we have a vacation place. People who don't pay attention to roof maintenance are often in for a very unwelcome surprise. A house down the road from us had so many bats in their attic that they had to remove the roof to get rid of them. There were 10s of thousands of bats in there. Of course the place was ruined. Bat pee and poop from 10s of thousands of bats can do a hell of a lot of damage.

It only takes a tiny crack for them to squeeze through.

2. There's lots of things flying about at night we rarely notice..
Night before last I was out looking at the sky at around three am while walking my dogs and something quite large and utterly silent flew by about ten feet over my head, I could only tell it was there because I saw it silhouetted against the glow of the sky that was lit up by the Moon low in the sky to the East..

4. I know they are supposed to eat insects and be helpful . . .
but those are just downright scary! They can also carry rabies so give them their distance.
