Getting something appraised
Hoping I can get some direction,

My wife and I were cleaning out her dad's house since his passing and we came across a picture that appears to have been done by an artist named P. Philippi and a 1902 date. I looked him up on wiki and the date seems to coincide with an artist named Peter Philippi.

Anyone know much about him and how to go about finding out if this is worth our while to have it appraised.

1. there are data bases out there of auction prices
that have histories, but they are subscription. the google tells me christie's sold one in '09, so i think it could be worth something. if you don't know a dealer that can look that up for you, take a good picture and send it to christies.

the big caution that i would give you at this point, tho, it to make sure it is an actual painting. sofa size reproductions of well known artist's works were big business in the 50's. look at it closely, and make sure the brush strokes have some dimension.
take a pic and post it. take both sides.

also cross post this here- http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=403

2. thanks mopinko
didn't know about the reproduction thing from the 50's but it's not sofa size (more like 24"x24") but figuring our brush strokes is something I'm not good at. I guess you would know right away if there's brush strokes or not.

the framing company's sticker is still on the back. Maybe I'll try to look up them.
