question about DU's BBCode implementation

Does anyone know how to display stuff literally, I've tried using <code></code> tags but it doesn't seem to suppress formatting and other BBCode.

I'm asking because it is a bit of a bind when I try to give an example of code that won't show as intended, I can use chevrons instead of square brackets, as shown above, but this isn't an ideal solution.

1. Tick the "Message Format" box for plain text

and then wrap it in <code> tags, like this:

[code][abc][def][/code]

2. ...and the result from above will look like this:

or this:

[h1][/h1]

or this:
