Attending my first UU service
I think I'm going to check out our local UU church. I'm pretty nervous, as I'll be going alone, but pretty excited too because I think I might finally find a spiritual home! Wish me luck!

2. Luck!
I love my local UU. I am thinking of going more often now that my kids are getting older. They have a great children's religious education program.

5. Remember the one means of damnation in the UU faith
Is to eat your dinner with your salad fork. Other than that everything is cool.

24. What?
I thought it was not buying fair trade coffee. Silly me.

Is it just me but at my UU church anyways, lots of people only drink fair trade coffee, is it like that at other UU churches?

25. It's a growing movement.
My coffee just switched this year to free trade coffee, but I know of three other UU churches in Colorado that only serve fair trade, as well.

Nice to see you here! :hi:

26. Mmmmm coffee
I'm about to switch to fair trade coffee only. Oh check out Starbucks, they now have fair trade coffee. Look for the tan bags with the FT label.

6. Good luck. I hope you have a good time.
Of all the UU churches I've ever attended, only one didn't feel overly welcoming. I later found out it was because their minister had recently passed away. I'm confident you'll meet some friendly and accepting people. Can't wait to hear about it.

7. So, how did it go?
I'm curious for a follow-up report because you aren't the only person around here who is anxious about going to a new church.

I think it would be very informative to know what your first impressions are, and what advice you would give to other people curious about UU.

my mom is really sick right now, which is why I'm living at home and why I want some spiritual vibes. I'm hoping to be able to make it this weekend though!

12. I did it!
And it was really good. I think I chose the wrong "service." They were discussing a resolution that they were going to vote on in a meeting after the service; I'm going to go back next week and catch a more "normal" Sunday.

13. Good for you!
So, other than being at the wrong service (they don't have "regular" services every week?), what was it like? (I'm thinking of going myself and just have no idea what to expect.) Did people talk to you or could you have come and gone without notice if you wished? I'm used to the "standard" protestant-type service - do they follow some kind of format?

I'm most interested in anything you wish to share.

But most of all, good for you for trying getting up and just doing it. :-)

15. if my church is any example
no, they don't have "regular" services

they're all "theme" services which is cool since I grew up Catholic and one week was pretty much the same as the next

18. Yes, you should go a couple of weeks tosee how they change.
I've noticed that whenever I meet a visitor at my UU service, I'll say "Oh, the services usually aren't like this. You just came on an unusual Sunday."
Finally, I realized that it was true almost every week.

21. Most UU churches have a congregational meeting 1x a year.
You probably hit that. Next week will be (as Monty Python would say) something completely different!

BTW, I'm a UU seminary student, and just posted the sermon I delivered yesterday in the religion and theology forum. It's kind of a primer on one of the UU sources (listed as "purposes" in the UU principles and purposes. You might be interested in reading it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=214x14130

Welcome to UUism!

23. You probably caught them
On an annual "meeting of the members" day, where the congregation gets together to handle official church business.
