Am I a lone Headbanger? I hope not...

Now I have to listen to bands like Sunn 0))) that require nothing more than shoegazing.

Actually,I still listen to a lot of speedy and tasty treats,though I really don't like the Metalcore stuff.I used to be mega into stuff like Sepultura,Vio-lence,Wargasm...name a thrash band and I listened to them.Mastodon is the best band in the metalcore crowd,imo.Far more complex and diverse ideas than most in the genre.

Now I listen to more Black and Death metal,stuff like Nile,Hate Eternal,Nachmystium,Axis of Perdition.

You'd probably have an orgasm going through all my old tapes :)

I think of them as ProgMetal...but never Metalcore, because I dont like anything with Core in its description..

Max is suppost to be rejoining SEPULTURA, last I heard anyway. Might just be for a few shows, people have been egar to see Max with SEPULTURA for a long time.

I never really cared for Death or Black Metal. I like Melodic Death (IN FLAMES, DARK TRANQUILLITY, CHILDREN Of BODOM, CHTHONIC) Gotenburg style is more my taste. Symphonic Black Metal is great (CRADLE Of FILTH, DIMMU BORGIR, SAYTRICON..ect) I can listen to just about any type of Metal, just as long as the music is good. The vocals are what usually kill a band for me, I dont like that Cookie Monster shit at all.

I like alot of "Hair Metal" too. I own lots of that stuff on cassette, vinyl and a nice run of CDS.

I'd like to see Sepultura get back together if they can match the intensity of Beneath The Remains and Arise.I've never really gotten that into Soulfly.Every CD has been the same song over and over.There's a few good tunes,but overall it doesn't move me.

It's funny you mention vocals killing music for you because that's what makes me cringe with a lot of music too,though we might be coming at this from different sides.I have no problem with the Cookie Monster growls,or the Xasthur/Leviathan type stuff,and Ministry's vocals are my favorite kind.But put on God Forbid or stuff like that and my head wants to pop.It doesn't make sense,but that's me!

Not to be a bummer but I rarely get into anything with "melodic" in it's description.The bands you mention are all very good at what they do though,I wont argue that,and I don't dislike them (Hell,I've seen three of them,so they can't be that bad to me).My friend listens to them all,and it's not like it's torture listening to them or anything.I just tend to like stuff much more inaccessible and hateful,like Anaal Nathrakh and shit like that.I listen to a lot of non-metal stuff like Jazz,Surf and even the new Cheap Trick CD (my biggest guilty pleasure in years),so I get all the melodies I need there. :)

I was never a Sepultura fan, I should give their old shit a listen I guess. I really like whats been coming out of Europe for the past few years, very few US bands have a sound that I care for.

I do like other elements of Rock. Its not all ShredFest all tthe time, I like some other things too..Some "lighter" things like PARADISE LOST, TO/DIE/FOR, KATATONIA, FALL OF THE LEAF, H.I.M, WITHIN TEMPTATION, ANGEL BLAKE...and lots more.

Even Industrial..HANZEL UND GRETEL, MORTIIS, MINISTRY, NIN, SNAKE RIVER CONSPIRACY, GENITORTURERS, GOTHMINISTER, DEATHSTARS, RAMMSTEIN, Ooomph!, KMFDM...tons more.

I will always like the "Hair Metal" stuff, I dont think I will be giving that up..

I have to melody in my metal, I can not take a constent beating on noise that has no levels to it. I like it heavy and to make since, continuous blast beats of nonsence is not music to me.

MNEMIC and IN FLAMES are my current favs right now, I have others but MNEMIC has that mix of Metal and Electronica..Kinda like Fear Factory or Strapping Young Lad..

And that's probably as close to Sepultura getting back together as we'll get. Too bad, because Beneath and Arise we're fucking awesome. I did like some of the tunes on Roots (Attitude, Spit, Cut Throat) but not nearly as much as the earlier stuff.

Fuck it, I'll just keep playing my Vio-lence and Wargasm albums when I need that thrash fix. :)

But I tend to go for brutal death and raw black. Favorites include Suffocation, Vader, Nile, and older Darkthrone. I do have a soft spot for Candlemass and Cathedral, however. Of the recent metalcore stuff that seems to have infected America, nothing. Absolutely nothing. Rather listen to another pointless Deicide release than some fucking frat boy band screaming over shitty breakdowns. At least Glen Benton is fun to point at and make fun of.

Their new album is one of the best they have released in years. Candlemass is great I haven't listened to them since they got back together but their old stuff is great. Metalcore and Nu-Metal is crap. And I too will take Deicide making the same album over and over again any day.

They have some live video of The SWORD and if you like them try CLUTCH. Just saw them live in Indianapolis and they were smashing.

Back in the day Iron Maiden and Accept were my two favorite bands. I still throw them on from time to time for a hit of nostalgia.

That's the music I love, though I don't consider it to be 'metal'--even though that's what it was called; anything hard was referred to as metal back then--I consider it hard rock. I used to write for a local rock magazine back in the day and I wrote about lots of those bands. My favorite band in the genre is a short-lived band called Cats In Boots. Are you familiar with them?

I liked some of the old school metal, though not as much as the hard rock. As for today's metal, I haven't liked what I've heard. I can't stand the so-called vocals in much of it. The singing is an important element of the song to me, and whatever they're doing isn't singing, nor is it pleasant to hear. Like you, I need some melody in my songs, though I never liked the hair bands that were too poppy (Poison, Warrant, etc.). Which 'hair bands' do you like?

I can totally understand what you're saying about vocals you can't stand, but I'm mixed on the "pleasant to hear" part. I try appreciate various styles of vocals, from nice stuff like Neil Diamond or Frank Sinatra to downright fucked, and even annoying at first, stuff liked Khanate or even a band as messed as To Live And Shave In L.A. (check 'em out, if only to see my own warped perspective on such matters). But play me a generic tune with a predictable path and standard lyrics and I'm usually snoozing, regardless of the vocals, the exception being three chord punk like The Ramones and surf music, both of which are too cool to not like.

I can think of a lot of hair bands I was into. Kiss, of course, was the first. Hell, I had Cinderella's first album ("album" gives my age away). Black N Blue, Great White, Y&T, Loudness, Keel, Ratt, Fastway, Scorpions, Accept...I could be here forever. :)

I always liked bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and even Bon Scott era AC/DC more than the glam stuff, but all music has it's moments, even some of the bad vocal stuff. ;)

I also liked Great White, AC/DC (both versions), hometown boys Aerosmith (who I saw play in a college gym when their first album was out). Others I was into included Salty Dog, Bang Tango, Whitesnake, Jackyl. Loved Guns'N'Roses--Axl had quite a voice. I'm sure there were a lot more but I'm blanking out now. When I was writing about the music, I had the opportunity to catch a lot of new bands, some of which were good but never made it anywhere. I forgot about Keel: I wasn't into them but I saw them in a club once because I was writing about the (local) opening band.

I like Frank Sinatra too, but I'm Italian and I think it's a requirement. :D

I knew all those bands you listed "Salty Dog, Bang Tango, Whitesnake, Jackyl. Loved Guns'N'Roses" All of which have not disappeared, specially WHITESNAKE who has a new album out that kicks ass! Gn'R will, they better release 'Chinese Democracy' this year. I have heard tracks off of it and it is excellent.

KEEL is suppost to be or has done another album, Ron did a country thing for a while.

Sabastian Bach is going to be on tour with Poison this summer and of course kick their ass. The new Bach album i smokin' Hot!!!

Then after "the day" had passed, I saw them headline in a club. They were excellent both times. I think they are a quite good, and underrated, band.

I know that a lot of those bands are still around or back together. My boyfriend gets a British music magazine, and every time I look through it I remark, "They're still around?" :-) Unfortunately, when these bands tour, most don't play in my area. I'm in the Boston area, ie college town, alternative music area. Some don't come to the Northeast at all, and others come to places at least an hour away and I'm too old to want to take a long ride to a concert these days.

And all three of those places are right in town by Fenway. If you don't already, grab a Boston Phoenix and check the club listings. You'd be amazed at how many older bands still play, they just aren't big enough for arena venues anymore.

And what do you mean "too old"? I'm 41 and I have three shows lined up to see in May alone. If I can travel an hour plus to partake of a moshpit then you have no excuse. ;)

I do check the Phoenix fairly regularly and these bands generally do not play in Boston. Worcester is the more likely location, and I had enough driving out to Worcester in the days of the Centrum; that city is a pita to get to. There's also the matter of finding someone else also willing to go to a distant show; heck, sometimes it's tough to find someone to go to a nearby show--I may have to sell my extra Springsteen ticket because no one wanted to go!!!

I'm 54, which gives me another 13 years of being tired of the long drives to shows. :-) And BTW, I also have tix to three shows in May. I'm one of the few of my peers who still gets out to shows. I might even be the only 54-year-old who has seen Buckcherry four times! :rofl:

Don't blame you for wanting to avoid Worcester. A lot of bands I like play the Palladium, but I hate going to Worcester (I'm in Fitchburg, all of 20 minutes away...but still). Not too mention that I wouldn't pay 40 bucks to see Jesus live. I'm not into bands popular enough to play the arenas, so I never even think about the TCU Center (or whatever it's called this week).

I find it amazing you're having trouble finding someone to go see Springsteen with. Not my bag, but he's a cool guy and it seems like everyone else loves him. I would guess that to be a gimme for someone.

You honestly don't know how much that inspires me. I'm 41, I love extreme music and seeing the bands live, and dancing around. To see people still into it at our ages always inspires me. My fave band, Nomeansno, put out the most kick ass, fun CD of 2007 and they're in their 50's. And Lemmy from Motorhead has to be at least 65 by now, and they aren't exactly playing folk tunes. It's amazing, and I hope I'm still that into it 20 years from now. :)

Nomeansmo? I'm not familiar with them; I'll have to check them out. I just got the new CD from a fairly new band that I discovered last year and I love it. They're an Irish band called The Answer and they play some kick ass hard rock.

I do remember all the clubs on Landsowne Street. Axis and Avalon closed and a new House of Blues club is now in that location. I went there the first weekend it was open and it's a pretty good place. I'm going to see Jeff Beck there in a couple of weeks.

I've gotten used to being the oldest person at a show these days--unless it's a band like AC/DC, whose crowd tends toward my peer group. It's a little weird because I remember that I was once one of those young'uns partying my brains out at the shows, but I also get a kick out of it. Who knows--some of the kids might be wondering who we are (if they even notice us at all). :rofl:

I used to love it in the 90's when Headbangers Ball had some good shit on the show. But the stuff thats on the radio now or whatever that qualifies as Metal is just bad now. I remember when Metallica was awesome but then became shit and became a bunch of douchebags. Now all these "metal" bands look like emo douchebags.

Maiden is the only band from the 80's that I still love today. They can even draw a huge crowd in the US still.

But I like the European bands like After Forever, Within Temptation, Nightwish, etc... I miss stuff like that.

But mostly metal and I like a lot of different types of metal. Black metal, doom, old 80's thrash, death metal etc. Some of my favorite bands at the moment are Celtic Frost, Beherit, Bathory, Venom, Von, Leviathan, Lurker Of Chalice, Manowar, Iron Maiden, old Slayer, old Lizzy Borden, Hellhammer, Voivod, Morbid Angel, Mercyful Fate and tons more.

I guess Moribund Records wanted it to be a Leviathan release. Supposedly it'll be only Lurker from here on in. Either way, the last Leviathan was my pick for CD of the year. He could call himself Sally for all I care. I could listen to the song "Merging With Sword, Onto Them" on a perpetual loop until I die. :)

Did you hear the CD by Woe? Fucking blazing, well played black metal (just one dude, naturally). His CD has kicked my ass since it came out in June.

Been a metal head most of my life...

My roots:

Metallic, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath(both Ozzy/Dio).

Currently...well, I just got some new stuff today actually. Someone in the Lounge(can't recall his name), recommended Opeth...I bought Black Water Park, and so far...I'm loving it, I'm on track 3(Harvest) so far...its not bad at all....

I also got Flyleaf, and Coheed and Cambria...I'm probably going to go back and get the rest of Opeth's cds...so far, I'm actually rather impressed.

I don't really care to much for the death metal/growing lead singer types of Metal, that I currently see on HeadBangers Ball...I don't get much exposure to new metal except from what I hear/see on the tv/radio.

I do LOVE the "What is DU listening to threads" in the Lounge...I usually book mark those, and with youtube, I can hear almost everything that is recommended....

Other bands, that have caught my eye recently(by recently I mean, the past 4/5 years).

This thread deserves to continue. I have been listening to a lot of 80's thrash lately, going back to my roots. Old Metallica, Dark Angel, Old Slayer, Heathen, Forbidden, S.O.D., Whiplash a lot more I cant remember right now.

Politics has me a bit burned out lately, which is why I've been going back to my roots too. It's escapism I suppose. Can't take any more of the Republican crap that's being spewed. It's hard to be depressed listening to good music. Nobody I know is into metal in any way, shape or form. I'm more into Tool & Old Metallica, UFO sometimes, Krokus. But Dio is my all-time favorite. Escapism...don't much like the world I see lately. I'd take a fire-breathing dragon over John McCain or Dick Cheney or the birthers any day. :)

Living legends. My first time seeing Ronnie James Dio live in concert. I'd sell my soul to meet him! But with today's economy, souls have been going at a cut rate. Probably the best offer old sulfur breath would make would be someone like...Vanilla Ice. :eyes:

How long do they play, how's the sound, the set, how the audience is...whatever you want to share! I'm just so excited about seeing this performance.

Beautiful night in the hills of Los Angeles. Nice night for an outdoor concert. Greek Theater...not a bad seat in the house. I'm about halfway up, and all the way over to the left.

Opening-opening band was a blues rock unit fronted by a helluva guitar player named Philip Sayce. That boy good. If he's still on the tour when they get to you, I recommend you get there early and catch their act. Only about five songs, but they close with a fun rendition of Cinnamon Girl that busts into She's So Heavy right in the middle. A killer club band, basically. But I made a mental note that if I ever got a chance to talk to the front-man, I'd tell him "Hold onto that drummer, dude."

Opening band Coheed and Cambria. What can I say? Although they are technically excellent, they're just not my thing. To tell you the truth, their set sounded to me like one long song. Oh and evidently they're from New York. The singer kept saying "We're Coheed & Cambria from New York!" But for their final (or maybe second to last?) tune, they played a mean cover of The Trooper. That was fun. And their many fans loved the show and were loud and jumping around, and a good time was had by all. But I was there to see...

The Main Event: Sabbath always has Geezer stage left and Iommi stage right, and Ronnie James right in the middle. The drum riser is taller than a man and well lit, so you can see Vinnie the whole show. Smoke and flashing lights and E5I50 blaring as our boys come out on stage and the crowd goes nuts. For metalheads, and for you people that don't know, Sabbath is Elvis. Sabbath is The Beatles. Sabbath is Zeppelin. They are The Source. And grown folks go crazy when Tony Iommi starts playing the guitar. Once the tension is at maximum, they break into The Mob Rules, and it's on! I mentioned in another post in another thread how Dio is only about 85%? Make that 95%. Dude kicked ass, ran around, did his demon dance routine, and his voice really only gave out real late in the show, only after he got a dose of stage smoke right in the face, and only for a couple of key high notes that we were all singing at the top of our lungs anyway. And he's what...70? Not bad at all, man. After Mob Rules, it's Children Of The Sea. Bring your singing voice, because it's audience participation time. I did a little research into the South American shows and the one in Vancouver last Friday, and the set list I posted is the same songs with only slight differences in the order. But every version of the set list finished up with Die Young, Heaven And Hell, and Neon Knights. I swear to god you are going to love this show. Have a ton of fun. I did.

I can't stand the wait! This is going to be a concert to remember.

Dio is only 67. Now don't round up on the poor guy. ;)
