If you like the Crystal Method, you'll like...

______________. (Please fill in the blank.)

I'd like to start a string of threads like these, or
have other people do it -- pick a favorite not in the
mainstream band and then have it take off from there.
You know, so we can get specific about turning people on to
music they might not know about...

Anyway, the first answer I could give to the above
question would the Prodigy.

The second would be Robert Miles.

1. Earlier Prodigy, anyway.
Their latest album SUCKS, except for a few songs...they hopped on the electroclash bandwagon, it seems. There's SOME electroclash I like (Goldfrapp, Peaches, Chicks on Speed), but the Prodigy's efforts in this area fall pretty short of the mark...

And my answers to the question would be: Leftfield, Orbital, the Orb, Underworld, and Plaid, among others (I listen to a lot of electronic music).

2. You ever heard of Ohm Lounge?
Orbital's almost emo -- kind of mellow right?

Good suggestions. Thanks!

3. Nowhere near "Emo"...
more influenced by the whole late-'80's-early '90's acid house scene. Some of it's more mellow, yes...almost chill-out music.

4. I'm still new at this.

I'll get my references crossed up occasionally.

I guess what I'm getting at is I like my electronic
"crunchy" -- like what Ministry does, you know?

Anyway, this is why I wanted a music forum -- just
these conversations.

Cool.

5. You like hard electronica, then.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 05:39 PM by Spider Jerusalem
Me too. I like mine dark and evil-sounding. It's all about the bassline. Heh.

Oh, and Ministry aren't really "electronic", so much. They're industrial (although some of their stuff has been brilliant...my favourite Ministry album is "The Land of Rape and Honey").

EDIT: YOu ought to check out Recoil (Alan Wilder, ex-Depeche Mode). Some good, dark, evil electronica. I'd recommend the album "Liquid".

6. Dark and evil -- that would be it.

I'm into what my friends call my "death die kill" music.
I call it my "anger management" music. It soothes my soul
to hear it.

Type O Negative, Sepultura, some Fear Factory, and of
course Ministry.

I like Greatest Fits best. It's got it all. Believe it not,
Filth Pigs got me into them, and that's one of their weakest
discs.

So does that give you more ideas? Or maybe one of us could
start a new "Industrial" thread...

7. Einstürzende Neubauten.
And also Coil, Current 93, Nurse With Wound...lots of industrial and darkwave/EBM bands that are good (not so much for the metal, though. Went through that phase when I was younger.)

8. Maybe some sample songs I could pull from
WinMX to sort of get a feel for them?

I don't know, though. I was looking for some space opera
over there and all I could get my hands on was Hawkwind.
Nobody had Bal-Sagoth, Melenium, Gamma Ray, Steel Prophet,
Aryeon -- I was disappointed.

9. Try Soulseek instead of WinMX...
Seem to have a greater chance of finding more obscure stuff on Soulseek. Hell, PM me with your email addess and I'll send you a few sample tracks. I have my entire CD collection ripped to my hard drive.

10. And thanks to Lazarus I now know what "ripped" means.
Sure I can do that. Pinging now.

Hell I even think I nabbed a Trojan somewhere off of
WinMX. It fouled my computer up royal for the past two
days until I remembered to run AVG.

:hurts:

I have a baby hard drive (10GB) so I don't dare store them
like that.

and I need more space. One 40GB drive, one 160GB. It's nice...I can queue up a month's worth of music in Winamp...heh.
