This is the second year in a row we have Great Blue Herons in the neighborhood
I've lived in my current home 17 years and have never seen any around until last summer. I only see one at a time but I bet there are a pair. They feed on the fish in the small river that half encircles my property. In the summer it's shallow and the banks are wooded, perfect habitat. Twice now I found them sitting on the bridge railings and watched them fly off as I drove by. Spectacular! If they don't quit that, I'm going to hit something someday.

1. One of my FAVORITE birds!! We have at least a couple pairs of them at
the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, right in the middle of Los Angeles. They were hanging out in the LA River yesterday, mostly standing in water.

Maybe they came to watch all the people with cameras and scopes......

2. Im amazed every time I see them
they are regulars in this area, even in the winter. Its hard to believe something that big can fly, but they are very graceful in the air.

4. My son saw it the other day - did the same thing to him
Had been sitting on the bridge railing and flew off as he approached. Startled him to say the least when it opened its long wings.
