Christmas Bird Count Time!
I'm planning on doing two this weekend, despite the winter storm.

Anyone else out counting?

1. So, of course we get the winter storm the weekend of the count.
I managed to get out on the count the day of the storm, but birds were kind of scarce. Best bird was a Barred Owl, though! We got snowed out by 1 pm and called it a day. The other CBC I was going to participate in was postponed, which is probably a good thing since the count data wouldn't have been representative of what was really around.

2. We had some major snow saturday
So I made sure to fill the feeders.
The regular gang of finches, chickadees, and cardinals, a couple sparrows, and 3 woodpeckers. About a half dozen each dark eyed juncos and mourning doves. And a robin. I guess he was lost.
My wife thought it was cute the way the cardinals would sit on our fence and puff themselves up to stay warm. Like big, red balls of fluff.

3. We had a laugh on Saturday
Woke up to find a robin sitting in a hoarfrost covered crabapple tree. The temps were in the low teens and he was so puffed up and bewildered looking. I could have believed he woke up from a long nap in a warm barn. I'm sure he was looking for food (crabapples) and I haven't seen him since. I felt bad for the poor thing and hope he finds his way south soon.
