Friday, 7/28: I worked out today--did you?
:hi:

Pretty exciting stuff today: I jogged 5 miles without stopping. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I'm sure for many of you, that's not a big deal, but for me, it's HUGE. The bunion on my right foot is pretty angry with me, but other than that I feel pretty damned good.

(Sunday is my birthday. I love that at my age I can run 5 miles without stopping. When I was a teenager, I couldn't even run one mile without stopping. Happy Birthday to me!)

2. Yoga today
Still working on that wrist - getting stronger and better everyday, but having some struggles with the shoulder. I think I damaged the rotator cuff in the accident, so that is giving me some problems. But still... some progress. :bounce:

Congrats on your five-mile jog! :woohoo:

And... Happy early birthday! Thanks for all of your encouragement to all of us here in the group, MM!

3. Four exercises to strengthen rotator cuff muscle
http://www.aafp.org/afp/980215ap/980215a.html

These work nicely. A guy roughly my age damaged his rotator cuff about the same time I did mine the last time. He had surgery, I did not. I was back in the weight room several weeks before his physical therapy brought him back to close to where he was prior to the injury. And yes, surgery was suggested for me also - my daughter works with an orthopedic surgeon.

4. Just finished 18 mile bicycle ride.
Good for you on your run! I ran a lot throughout my 28 year military career, and hated nearly every step of it. I think that's why I enjoy my recumbent bicycle. I can lean back to watch the clouds; there is enough breath left in me to sing if I want to; and I can outrun a lot of the dogs.

So, I think 5 miles is HUGE also. Congrats.

6. even as a teenager, I was too big
and too unfit to run.

Of all the things I do for cardio (stationary bike, StairMaster, rowing machine, elliptical machine, and jogging) I run most often because it was just something I could never do. Doing it now makes me feel empowered.

I'm training for the Tufts 10K in October. I think if I can do 5 miles consistently, and the occasional 6 miles, I should be ok.

the biggest problem with all that running (other than my foot) is the time involved. I'm a slow runner, so 5 and 6 miles takes up a LOT of my time.
