Rumsfeld outrage: compares Bush critics (Democrats) to Hitler appeasers
CNN/AP: Rumsfeld: Bush foes lack courage on terror
August 29, 2006

Administration critics suffer "moral and intellectual confusion" on terrorisim, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday accused critics of the Bush administration's Iraq and counterterrorism policies of lacking the courage to fight terror.

In unusually explicit terms, Rumsfeld portrayed the administration's critics as suffering from "moral and intellectual confusion" about what threatens the nation's security.

In remarks prepared for delivery to the American Legion's national convention, Rumsfeld recited what he called the lessons of history, including the failed efforts to appease the Adolf Hitler regime in the 1930s.

"I recount this history because once again we face the same kind of challenges in efforts to confront the rising threat of a new type of fascism" he said.

Rumsfeld spoke to an American Legion convention as part of a coordinated White House strategy, in advance of the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, aiming to take the offensive against administration critics at a time of doubt about the future of Iraq and how long U.S. troops must remain there....

40. This is good news. Their rhetoric is getting more and more ridiculous
Sure, there will always be the block of brainless bed-wetters who allow their thoughts to be completely shaped by anything these a-holes say, but the fact that the Right has gotten so ridiculous in their statements is proof that fewer and fewer people are buying their bullshit and its making them desperate.

Can you imagine Rummy saying this in 2001 or 2002? There's no way he would have. These words, like Orrin Hatch's comments about the terrorists hoping for a Democratic victory in November, are just the inevitable progression of a political party that rules with fear and manipulation, upping the ante each time until they will probably be soon claiming that the Rapture is at hand, George W. Bush is Jesus Christ, and liberals are the forces of Satan.

So let them keep talking, I say. Every time they do they lose more respect and support.

Keep talking righties, you're only helping us!

99. I'm thinking ...the GOP had to play the Hitler card...
They want to beat us to the punch. For years now, most of us thought of Bush as a Hitler clone.

The comparison was never used openly and officially as democratic talking point. They want to use the Hitler reference on us, before we use it on them -in the "main stream media".

17. Hey everyone...
...be a good little patriot and shut yer yap. Take the example of the Germans of the '30's to heart. Don't question your government, just go along with what they are doing. Lie back, relax and just take it. There, there don't you all feel better already (is this necessary??: :sarcasm: )

”What luck for the rulers that men do not think.”
Hitler, Adolf

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

...“The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus become vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State”

46. Little known fact
Just before aspartame hit the market, the Company that held the patent (sorry, I forget which drug co.) made a significant donation to the University of Texas, in return for which a study about to be published by UT (I would guess biochemistry department) was deep sixed. The study concluded that it was a horrible substance and not fit for human consumption. All the parties involved were gagged. I find out about it because I know someone who had been hearing about it from an acquaintance before the gag.

Now that I know Rumsfield was involved, it makes a lot more sense.

101. actually, there's a secondary reason...
...to invoke fascism, Nazi-ism, Hitler, etc; they're wrapping the WOT in Greatest Generation tissue (of lie) paper, a mere rhetorical device to associate their resource-Abu Grahibing militarism with something most Americans have positive feelings towards--defeating the Axis Powers (rebranded/remarketed as the Axis of Evil) and liberating half the planet from their despotism. It's why they said "liberating" Baghdad in 2003 would be a replay of liberating Paris in 1944.

The goal of the GOP, as I see it, is to get those sheeple that cannot think for themselves to believe that the terror threat is real and that it effects them directly. They must hype the Brush policies i.e., if it was not for Brush's policies (subverting FISA, Torture, Detention) that we would cetainly have been attacked by now since OBL is still on the loose and the Al-Qeada chaps have permeated the world like a cancer and now we must fear the Hezbollah group because that too is trying to kill all of us led by the Shiite Iranians just like the Nazi's tried to kill the Jews in the 1930's...

There is method to the madness... just hope that enough wake up to end this nightmare quick.

37. we are in absolutely no confusion about who threatens
the nation's future and Security.

You do. You and your boy-thug of a president and walking corpse of Vice President. It was on your watch 9/11 took place. You still have not caught or confirmed the death of Osama Ben Ladden. You abandoned Afghanistan leaving to the war lords and the reborn Tali-ban. You are the ones that invaded Iraq country that had, as the president has admitted, noting to do with 9-11 for reasons we can still only guess at because you refuse to tell the truth. You are the ones, who once the bad idea of invading Iraq was finished, botched the occupation by a mind boggling combination of corruption, greed, fear and arrogance. Because you mistaken small minded ill tempered stubbornness for will you are the one insisting that the US military keep pouring blood, equipment, and treasure into the sand trap that iraq has turned into, badly damaging the ability of the military to respond to another grout conflict should it arise. You are the ones waging war on something you call Islamofacisim in which you lump the Sunni, Al Queda, The secular Baath party, Shiite Iran, Hezbollah and Humas an alliance so unlikely that it should be exhibited next to the Unicorn. You are the ones obsessed with internal enemies and spent much time accusing your opponents of being in league with this country's enemies. Your arrogance has damaged our relationships with the outside world. You have shrugged your shoulders at the killing of civilians and the use of torture. You are ones waving and empty saber case at Iran, hinting in your madness that you would use Nukes. You are why America arouses fear and loathing world wide. Yes they hate us, they hate us because we are monsters. You are the ones who have drained our Treasury with tax cuts to those who already had most but who wanted more and you payments to corrupt insider companies who see a government contract as nothing more than a feed trouth allowing them to suck down our damn tax dollars.

You refuse to acknowledge mistakes or even the actual reality of events. you've increased the gap between rich and poor, black and white north and south and have set people against people merely to suit your own needs. You've shown contempt for the idea of a nation of laws and representative democracy the two founding principles of our nation.

You are swine. You should be tarred, feathered, beaten, whipped and driven from the land.

did he actually manage to say something without sounding like his hair was in a bun and he was wearing an apron and baking an apple pie? With apologies to real grannies everywhere, that man out-grannies Granny Clampett.

Isn't it funny how the republican best offense is to accuse everyone else of precisely the deed they are themselves doing. Look, over there, a shiny thing (yawn).

Now we're supposed to debate how terrible it is to be called a fascist and compared to Hitler's legions instead of the real issue.

Rumsfeld, you were a miserable failure in Vietnam, and you are still a miserable failure. You are the one prosecuting this war, and you are failing. You underestimated the cost, the time in occupation, and the strategy for Plan A, much less even a nod to Plan B or C, or utter failure, which is where we are right now.

Go ahead with your pathetic lame-ass (thx again Skinner) name calling - but you're still a failure and you can still talk about fascists and hitler and the diameter of Uranus if it makes you happy but it doesn't change the fact that you are the one who is responsible for failing here.

Europe compares to a largely underground loosely knit group(s) capable of unleashing terrible attacks. And let's be truthful (something these war criminals are incapable of), when Germany declared war on the US and Japan invaded the country was nearly 100% on board to fight the Axis. Nearly every man and woman sacrificed with all their might including massive lost of life to stop Hitler. I simply don't see that response to what these clowns call the global war on terror. Indeed few, if any, have family members enlisting to go to the illegal war in Iraq. Rummy is simply a disgrace and war criminal. A liar, who should be held accountable for all his crimes.

They are trying to make us believe we are fighting the new Hitler. from, Hannity, Coulter, Bush, Chaney and now Rummie. However, instead of one man bent on taking over the world, we have a lot of little Hitlers. (They are getting desperate)
Be afraid, they are coming to get us over here, if we don't get them over there. We must continue to deal with them by demonstrating our incompetence, our lack of knowledge on how to properly conduct a war on terror, by our overt concern about their oil and by continuing to continuing the course of this war in a way that makes absolutely no sense. Why, we are even staying on their terms, because, as our leaders' logic goes, if we leave to undertake a smarter path, they will say they won. Who really is in control here?

I say the Democrats truly have the right idea. We need a new direction and a course in order to fight terrorism. These NEOCONS are crazy.

61. Herr Field Marshall Von Rumsfeld is ignorant of history
Chamberlain knew that he was negotiating a temporary peace with Nazi Germany; the British gov't was well aware that war was coming no matter what they did to 'appease' Hitler. Britain at that time could not go toe-to-toe with Germany militarily, either in manpower or modern weaponry, and they knew it. Time was traded for a ramp-up of military production and training.

If the war would have come two years later than it did, the disaster of Dunkirk would not have happened. The British would have been able to at least reach parity in manpower and tactics.

No war= no military contracts= no huge war profits= no Republicans getting donations.

70. Henny penny, Hitler appeasers
A little bit of criticism against a regime that has had no accountability for it's failed policies and even continues to find other countries to invade, and the next thing you know it's "henny penny, hitler appeasers."

DONALD RUMSFELD: The images you are seeing on television you are seeing over and over and over, and it's the same picture of some person walking out of some building with a vase, and you see it 20 times and you think, "my goodness, were there that many vases?" (Laughter) Is it possible that there were that many vases in the whole country?

REPORTER: Do you think that the words "anarchy" and "lawlessness" are ill-chosen...

DONALD RUMSFELD: Absolutely. I picked up a newspaper today and I couldn't believe it. I read eight headlines that talked about chaos, violence, unrest. And it just was Henny-Penny, "the sky is falling." I've never seen anything like it. And here is a country that's being liberated, here are people e going from being repressed and held under the thumb of a vicious dictator, and they're free. And all this newspaper could do, with eight or ten headlines, they showed a man bleeding, a civilian, who they claimed we had shot... one thing after another. It's just unbelievable how people can take that away from what is happening in that country. Do I think those words are unrepresentative? Yes.

84. Harry Reid's response from TPM
Secretary Rumsfeld’s reckless comments show why America is not as safe as it can or should be five years after 9/11. The Bush White House is more interested in lashing out at its political enemies and distracting from its failures than it is in winning the War on Terror and in bringing an end to the war in Iraq. If there's one person who has failed to learn the lessons of history it's Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld ignored military experts when he rushed to war without enough troops, without sufficient body armor, and without a plan to succeed. Under this Administration's watch, terror attacks have increased, Iraq has fallen into civil war, and our military has been stretched thin. We have a choice to make today. Do we trust Secretary Rumsfeld to make the right decisions to keep us safe after he has been so consistently wrong since the start of the Iraq War? Or, do we change course in Iraq and put in place new leadership that will put the safety of the American people ahead of partisan games? For the sake of the safety of this country, it is time to make a change.

But the person who like to boast about what is "unknowable" is in no position to talk about "moral and intellectual confusion" about what threatens the nation's security. Unknowable is unknowable --- except to those that correctly predicted what was supposed to be unknowable.

While Rumsfeld may "recall" a string of terrorist attacks and it should be obvious to anyone that terrorists must be confronted, not appeased it really has no bearing on his own record of failure. I certainly have not heard anybody talking about steps that could be considered appeasment when it comes to, say, capturing or killing bin Laden. If anybody is appeasing bin Laden it is Rumfeld in his approach to getting bin Laden, especially after letting him out the back door at Tora Bora.

In fact, I do see a great deal of intellectual confusion and it is coming from none other than Donald Rumsfeld.

110. I've already responded several times to comments in this thread!
I'm so effing pissed off at these people! I've been hearing this fascism meme all day; THIS is their new product, and they're rolling it out now. I think they'll fold it into the whole Iran story. They want us scared, they want to keep power, and they want war with Iran. This is part of their plan, IMHO.

Thanks for posting this, DMM; even though it's driven my blood pressure up, it's one of those need to know kind of things. We need to be vigorously knocking this one down, ASAP, and as often as possible. The 25-30% who are total effing idiots already believe this steaming pile of doo, but the others are the ones I'm worried about. You know, the ones who will believe it once they hear it repeated a gazillion times in the so-called liberal media.

112. Big Republican tactic - accuse your opponent of what you are - ie fascists
They are the fascists - or at least well on their way:

fascism - "A philosophy or system of government that is marked by stringent social and economic control, a strong, centralized government usually headed by a dictator, and often a policy of belligerent nationalism." (From The American Heritage Dictionary)

123. Pro. Jec. Tion.
A couple of months ago I had to toss Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich behind the bed because the similarities between what his people were doing and what these people were doing was driving me crazy. I'll bet you every one of those bastards has a copy of that book locked up in a desk somewhere.

What's even crazier is how these fools consistently back history's biggest losers. They emulate the foreign policy and diplomacy of the Athenians, who were destroyed by the Persians and the Spartans. They emulate the military campaigns of Napoleon, who led his country to the brink of ruin twice and killed off two generations of men. And they adopt the absurd rhetoric, media control, and streetfight politics of the Nazis. Toss in their attempts to parrot the economic brilliance of an Argentinian military dictatorship and the religious extremism of the very people they're trying to fight and you've got a nation turned to shit, headed for the fan of a turbojet at takeoff--the most spectacular self-destruction history has ever known.

Does it really not occur to him that maybe it's him and the rest of the idiotic minority who agree with him that have it wrong?

MSNBC's Countdown/Keith Olberman just delivered a KO punch to Rummy.
Finally someone with the cajones in the right place at the right time, to go after these low-life scumbags. Could this be "The start of something big?"-----------KUDOS TO YOU KEITH
