MANCHESTER, N.H., July 13 — When Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton popped into view for the audience gathered on the football field at Keene High School, a hearty cheer went up from the hundreds who had been waiting almost two hours in the sun.

The crowd noise swelled to a roar, though, when a familiar-looking white-maned man, appearing tanned (O.K., a little red, too) and wearing a blue golf shirt, climbed the risers behind her. It was, of course, her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

The Clintons campaigned together in New Hampshire on Friday for the first time this election season as Mrs. Clinton, of New York, continued her quest for the Democratic presidential nomination. Blue, red and green signs dotted the crowd: Women for Hillary; Clinton Country; Hillary for President. But it was clear whom many had come to see.

“When they said, ‘Hillary’s on her way,’ we said, ‘Where’s Bill?’ ” said Peg Fegley, 68, of Spofford.

For Mr. Clinton, it was a political homecoming of sorts, a return to the place that started him on his trajectory to the White House in 1992 and earned him the nickname “the Comeback Kid.”

It was in New Hampshire, when his campaign was tottering amid questions about his Vietnam War draft history and accusations of infidelity, that Mr. Clinton, with a head cold and laryngitis, talked his way to the point of exhaustion from one end of the state to another, scoring a strong second-place finish that righted his candidacy....

Note to Bill:

Leave Hillary at home. Have fun on your own on the campaign trail. She can stay in the Senate. We can elect somebody really progressive for President and you can have all the fun you did in 1992 and 1996.
