Irish comedian Dave Allen dies at 68
Irish comic legend Dave Allen dies
Dave Allen, the Irish comedian who became a household name on British television in the 1970s and 1980s, has died. He was 68.

Allen died in his sleep at his West London home.

He had been ill for some time, according to his agent

I remember he told great stories while perched on a stool, a cigarette in one hand, a drink within reach. A funny man not afraid to laugh at himself.

1. They used to run his show on PBS here in the States.
I think it's been over 20 years since I've seen it, but some of his material still remains in my memory, such as a story about an Irish wake for a man named Murphy.

Rest in peace, Dave Allen.

2. A real shame
Dave Allen was one of my favourite comedians. If Bill Hicks was Irish he would have sounded like Dave Allen.

3. Exactly what fellow comic Barry Cryer said
BBC tributes page

"He was an old friend but he was an idol of mine as well. I watched him develop, from his days on The Val Doonican Show to becoming a story-teller, delivering his polemics.

Cryer added: "He was so serious and committed, but he proved you could be serious and funny - he was our Bill Hicks.
