The House passed H.R 554 "Food consumption act"

It's a bill preventing anyone to sue a fast food company because of claims of obsetity.

This is a great bill, can't wait till this get passed in the Senate and gets the signature of the president.

So in the future you won't be reading in the paper of some idiot suing mcdonalds cause there big macs and fries made me fat.

This is going to really help society.

Though, I must ask, why the HELL would one eat there? I don't. I don't shop at Mao-Mart either.

I do not like the legislature shielding certain businesses from lawsuits. If you are going to have less regulation, you have to allow for lawsuits. What's good for the Goose should be good for the Gander, or in other words, if we are going to stop looking over your shoulder and allow you to police yourself, we want to keep some sort of mechanism for punishing bad corporations.

We are Home of the Frivolous Lawsuits, as you probably know. :D

I think it's a good thing too. I see so many fat 6 year olds who look more bloated than me. And I'm 33!

But we are a fast food society because we want everything cheap and fast. I think there's more to the problem than this McSymptom...

Seriously, I really did think the repukes had stooped that low. Altho this thing is pretty low, I must say.

There are states here in America that tax food (not food you buy in a restaurant; food you buy in a supermarket! Can you believe it?). That this does not strike people as repugnant, I cannot explain. Thank god I live in CT where that thought is unspoken, even if some think it!

If fast food and junk food makers are going to get special protections against law suits, if Big Pharma has special protection against law suits, if gun makers have special rights in suits, if the government itself has protection against law suits, damn it, where's my protection? And why not everyone else, too? Hey, let's all demand protection from law suits!

I am not at all pleased with this trend toward granting businesses more rights than actual humans. Suing McBurgerJack because you are fat may be stupid, but if McBurgerJack preyed on your stupidity to get you to eat poorly, then McBurgerJack ought to be held accountable for its part in gulling you. Businesses in general need to be accountable for the kind of advertising they do and markets they pursue. The issue is, did the junk food purveyors knowlingly set out to position their products as healthy meals? Let the courts examine the evidence and find out.

Should an individual who owns and runs a small, independent restaurant have to respond to lawsuits from people who claim to have gotten fat eating at that restaurant? Now, suppose the owner opens other locations, hires managers, and sells the business to shareholders. When do the owners cease to be human?

Can't we make a distinction between nutritional quality and caloric content? Yet, either way, if one has eaten enough of a particular restaurant's food for one to gain weight, then shouldn't one pay significantly more attention to one's own first-hand experience than to advertising?

Quick... name a processed food that this bill doesn't cover.

Perhaps if the regulatory and legislative functions were working to the benefit of Americans instead of the corporations, civil law suits wouldn't be necessary.

which is totally preventable by eating right and taking some responsibility with yourself. IF it was giving them umbrella style protedtion from all lawsuits stemming from their product such as contaminated food then I might have a problem with it. AS I read it doesnt seem bad. People need to wake up and know if they eat shit then they are going to increase their chances of looking like shit

Quite clearly if one reads nutrition labels. Hell, go to Subway and you can get the fat and caloric information for a Big Mac.

Fast food is addictive psychologically. I got two personal training certifications for personal reasons. I learned that fast food could be ok if you stay away from soda and french fries. If you do that you probably won't have to worry about getting obese. The problem is soda and french fries are the most popular items on the menu. Both soda and french fries cause a isulin high. These two items spike blood sugar real fast then within a few hours blood sugar drops and the person feels down. The problem is that's similar to drugs. Caffeine and nicotein do the same thing. These business people aren't stupid, they know they'er trying to market addicting products. So, I think they do have an accountability to consumers who are ignorant of these things.
