Hello all - need some advice. My driver's side window (elec) is
going wonky; it's off the track inside the door or something, and I can usually jockey it up/down using one hand on window and one on the switch, but today, it's stuck. Is this a DIY kind of thing, or do I need a pro to take off interior panel and re-seat window?
I'm fairly handy, just have never tried anything like this before.
Any suggestions or advice appreciated - thanks much!

1. It's not hard to take a door panel off.
Just look around and everywhere you see a screw take it out. There may be some panels that are snap in that hide screws too. Most door panels are snapped in place. Often a really secret place they hide big screws for the door panel is behind the arm rest. Check and see if you can remove that and if so I will bet there are a couple screws behind it. Now I am not guaranteeing this but once all screws are removed one usually has to kind of tap (beat) on the bottom of the panel, up wards, to unsnap the panel. Once the panel is free you will most likely have to take off all the electrical connections as the driver door has controls for all the doors and locks. These connectors have little tabs on them that lock them in so just pulling them off will more than likely pull a wire out. Look for the tabs that lock the connectors in and use a small flat screwdriver to get under them and work them loose. This may seem like a lot but it takes maybe 10 minutes. Just locate everything before you start loosening. Odds are all the screws are phillips head.

Now, after you have gone to all this trouble you will probably find out the window frame is shot. They are really just stamped steel an not very substantial. You may be able to fix it but more than likely you will need to replace it. I have found that if you try and repair the lift it ends up costing just as much as a new one and takes ten times the time. If you are going to attempt this I would get one in advance (usually dealer cost is around $200.00 - $300.00) and if you don't need it they will refund your money. If you can take a door panel off you can replace the window lift. All the ones I have seen takes four screws to remove and you lift the window and motor assembly out and drop another in. You will then need to adjust the window to slide up and down easily and to make a good seal on the weather stripping on the outside of the window frame. This is done with two separate adjustment screws. Then just put the door panel back on and you are in business.

2. Hey, thanks so much for your response and the vote of confidence!
I know the motor works; the window is just off-track (and from what I saw when surfing in effort to find an answer to this, it seems to be a really common problem with Pontiacs...)
So yes, I think I can do this! :-)
Thanks again for the tips!

3. If you're fairly handy, invest the $15 in a Chilton's manual
or like. They'll show you the proper way to take the door panel off, without breaking any of the likely plastic tabs that hold it on.
