Termination Bill H.R. 2824
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 11:05 PM by CountAllVotes
H.R. 2824 was introduced June 21, 2007 by Congresswoman Diane Watson. This bill proposes "to sever the United States' government relations with the Cherokee Nation" because of the tribe's recent constitutional amendment to limit citizenship to those who descend from Indians listed on the U.S. census of 1906 known as the Dawes Roll.

The Cherokee Nation is now asking people to tell their story as being Cherokee in order to prevent the Cherokee Nation being stricken as being Federally recognized being they (the Cherokee) have opted to strike members on the Dawes rolls that are the Freedmen that descended from African slaves and were on the Trail of Tears.

As I mentioned before, I viewed this as a grave/fatal error on the part of the eastern Cherokee Nation who are the ones who started this whole thing.

Now the Federal government wants to strike the Cherokee Nation altogether as a recognized tribe given this recent act and in turn, the tribe is asking members to "tell their story".

I have no story of my own to tell here as they ask for. I have relations that are on the Dawes Rolls (yes I do) but I cannot prove it being the paperwork I have is apparently a batch of forged documents.

Alas, now the Cherokee want help. Is it too late?

What a nightmare we see here now and it is all because of two highly toxic things, bigotry and greed.

:(

The Cherokee Nation should have thought more than once before they decided to proceed with changing the Dawes Rolls, thus breaking the treaty they have had with the Federal government since the early 1900s.

I wonder if they can reinstate the Black people (the Freedmen) that they have opted to strike from the rolls?

This is a very sad situation and yes, they brought in on to themselves sadly.
