KOEB Meeting 5/20/08 Kentucky and Oregon Primaries Edition

:hi: And heeeeeere we go again...

MSNBC has already projected Hillary as winner in Kentucky. What a shock, eh?

Warning: Keith is wearing the Hideous Green White Polkadot Tie.

Come on in anyway.

Every single poll he's seen has Hillary beating McCain? How much you want to be that he's seen polls that Obama beats McCain also???

2. It's really the percentages that count
Edited on Tue May-20-08 06:39 PM by rocknation
With one fifth of the precincts reporting, Obama has 44%. He needs only 29% to get the 15 delegates he needs to clinch in KY. Hillary will need to get 86% of the vote to stop him.

They'll probably go back to talking about Teddy in an hour or so.

Can I say something really stupid and shallow here? The hair on the side of Keith's head tonight looks like soft kitten fur, and I want to pet it.

That is all. *sigh*

I'll try to be deeper for the rest of the night.

This has been going on so long, do you ever wonder whether we'll miss it? These primaries and caucuses have become like a way of life. Yet we had every reason to believe it would all be over by Feb. 5. Just like Hillary. But...not so.

I just heard Dead Intern Joe bloviating. I can't stand him. I hope to God that Obama climches this thing tonght. I hope the "superdelegates" tell Hillary where she can go.

I'm really bummed out about Ted Kennedy. Brings back memories of my Dad. He died of metasized malignant melanoma in his brain. He started out with seizures as well.

Do have some good news. My niece is in the hospital tonight having her first baby. She's thrilled and so is her boyfriend. They're getting married next June. I am so excited I could scream...

Tracy or Kevin. Not a word yet. Apparently her water broke last night and at noon today she was dilated to 5 cms. The doctor told Tracy a few weeks ago she might have to have a C-section but she went into labor early so maybe the baba won't be as big.

I just lost the TV. Mr Wonderful is watching a DVD of the 1991 All-Ireland. He doesn't want to listen Keith and Tweety all night.

I figured to start cooking while Hillary is giving her victory speech. Instead, the insidious little thing is 21 floors below me in the next street, spewing out a tinny electronic rendering of "Music Box Dancer" and making me wish for a soft cone instead of a square meal.

22. Hi, all
I'm home from the hospital They had to redo my daughter's stent, which had come dislodged. Now the rest of the pulverized stone should be able to drain out and her bilirubin levels should start to come down. They'll let her come home as soon as they've dropped enough. Hopefully tomorrow, but maybe not until Thursday.

I'm so sad about Teddy. A stroke would have been better than this awful news.

52. Nope
The only real operation was the gall bladder removal. The other procedure is what had to be redone -- the one where they put a camera down her esophagus. That's how they found that the stent had come dislodged and that the duct was still blocked. The new stent should do the trick!

38. You know, someone's got to give this "Some" person a good smack across the mouth.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 07:35 PM by BerryBush
This "Some" keeps saying such TERRIBLE things about Hillary and her followers and that they should give up? Should they? NOOOOOO!

"Senator Obama and I remain hopelessly deadlocked, except I am beating him in the popular vote"...OK, she didn't say it, but that's what she means. "We are going toe to toe."

OMG, the CROWD is reciting "GO TO HILLARYCLINTON.COM" with her! The beg came right up front!!

Here she goes again with her speech to the supers. "We have to pick someone who can win in November and is best prepared." Oh please.

"More people have voted for me than for anyone who's ever run for the Democratic nomination...in the face of naysayers and skeptics!"

Yes, she's the champ, despite "all the pundits' chattering"!

Delusional.

Now here comes the pitch to all those hard-working white people.

Oh, and she's best prepared to deal with foreign policy because she ate tea and cookies with the wives of 80 world leaders, now mostly deceased.

She's still running not to prove she's tough, but because we have to beat the Repugs and she's the ONLY one ready, willing and ABLE to do that! Woo hoo! Now she's going to go on and win the rest of the states and Puerto Rico and she's going to FIGHT for the Florida and Michigan delegates and she's going to "fight for the nominee, whoever SHE may be!"

Kentucky-fellating..."This state KNOWS HOW TO PICK PRESIDENTS!!! WE CAN'T WIN WITHOUT KENTUCKY!!!!"

Blablahblah..."This race is STILL SO CLOSE...neither of us has that magic number...neither of us can...our party will have a tough choice to make...they will choose me because I am ready and I win swing voters in swing states and did I mention I will be Ready On Day One???????"

:puke:

Oh, and now a story about an eightysomething black woman who is FIGHTING FOR HER. And the young wife of a veteran. Yadayada. And the poor kid who sold his bike and his video games. "Thanks, kid...I really needed that money."

Oh, and don't forget: She will UNITE the country!!!! Yeah!!!!!

Oh well, at least Baghdad Terry didn't say it was going to be a speech for the ages. It wasn't.

I don't get those territories who can vote to nominate but can't vote to elect. Either let them vote in both or not in either. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks.

I just talked to my sister and she said our sister-in-law Pat, who's a nurse, said it'll be at least a couple of more hours and Joan told me that the doctor is only going to let Tracy push hard for like an hour and if the baby isn't out then, she'll do the C-section.

She's like 2 and 1/2 weeks early, the baby wasn't due until the 6th of June.

I'm just worried about Tracy. She's my favorite niece and she's hard time growing up. My brother, was an alcoholic and didn't pay one bit of attention to her and her mother left Chicago for Florida right after Tracy graduated from high school and the divorce from my brother was final and more or less told her "you're on your own."

She's put herself through college and last summer got a masters degree in ESL. She's a great kid.

95. Just got this e-mail from President Obama
Sharon --

The polls are closed in Kentucky and votes are being counted in Oregon, and it's clear that tonight we have reached a major milestone on this journey.

We have won an absolute majority of all the delegates chosen by the people in this Democratic primary process.

From the beginning, this journey wasn't about me or the other candidates. It was about a simple choice -- will we continue down the same road with the same leadership that has failed us for so long, or will we take a different path?

Too many of us have been disappointed by politics and politicians more times than you can count. We've seen promises broken and good ideas drowned in a sea of influence, point-scoring, and petty bickering that has consumed Washington.

Yet, in spite of all the doubt and disappointment -- or perhaps because of it -- people have stood for change.

Unfortunately, our opponents in the other party continue to embrace yesterday's policies and they will continue to employ yesterday's tactics -- they will try to change the subject, and they will play on fears and divisions to distract us from what matters to you and your future.

But those tactics will not work in this election.

They won't work because you won't let them.

Not this time. Not this year.

We still have work to do to in the remaining states, where we will compete for every delegate available.

But tonight, I want to thank you for everything you have done to take us this far -- farther than anyone predicted, expected, or even believed possible.

And I want to remind you that you will make all the difference in the epic challenge ahead.

Thank you,

Barack Obama

You know, I think the problem here is less with Obama and more with Appalachia. When one small homogenous region of the country won't vote for a black man, they get to be labeled as people who "won't vote for a black man".

how much can you hear about before you cut your losses prematurely, at least at this point?

How many stories do you listen to about people who won't vote for you because you are an N-word, because they think you will appoint other N-words to higher offices than white people and they don't think N-words should be above white people, and because they think you are a Muslim even though people keep telling them you are not a Muslim, because well, even though people say it, they still "believe" otherwise?

Tomorrow morning, I have to drive to Madison (3 hours) to meet with my District Superintendent and another D.S. to talk about what's going on at my church. I am scared and worried that it will be one of those "what's wrong with Ruth" meetings. With all the stress I've been under lately, this is probably the worst for me. My confidence level is pretty low, and I've convinced myself that they're gonna throw me out of ministry. :scared:

But before they move people, they want to work to find some kind of resolution, because they don't want the next pastor to end up facing the same kind of problems.

This particular congregation has had a habit of running off their pastors every 3 years. I've been here 5. Whenever I ask them to do something for missions, or even simply to write a mission statement, they turn on me, and I become the "issue." I'm just tired of the games, and this time, I refused to play along. That's probably what I'll tell the DS tomorrow.

Thanks for the pep-talk. That's just what my Mom would say to me.

138. I miss mine, too, Rev
I wish she was here as support through my daughter's MS diagnosis and gall bladder surgery. It seems like as soon as she died everything started falling apart. Not only with my daughter, but one of my sister's daughters just separated from her husband because of abuse. My sister lives in Israel and her daughter lives in Baltimore. My mother didn't know about any of it before she died.

I will tell them that my #1 priority is to my Dad, and that's what I had to do last month - even before cleaning the parsonage, make a list of my duties, or seek counseling. I still stand behind that decision.

I hope it comforts you to know your Mom's wisdom and love will always be with you, Sharon.

190. Hugs.
Hope your daughter is home soon and back to normal. More hugs on the MS thing. It seems there is more or it around these days or I just know too many people with it. It is a hard diagnosis to hear and my heart goes out to you and the whole family. If you can call anything an upside there is one in that she is female. They are finding some very promising things to help women with MS. Has to do with some hormone you have during pregnancy. I can't find my link right now and will keep looking for it. Basically they found that women with MS seemed to have less severe symptoms to almost no symptoms while pregnant. They have found what hormone it is that seems to stall the MS and are now doing trials with it. It is the most promising treatment those I know with MS (that are female) have heard about. I so hope her symptoms are mild and stay that way (or even better go away). Hang in there, she can lead a happy, productive and long life. I know she has her family's love and support. She also has a lot of others praying for her.

On your niece, sounds like she is making a good move getting out of a bad situation. Shame she had to suffer with an abuser but with support she can make a better, safer life for herself. Keep in touch with her and just listen. If she goes back, no matter how much you hate it please just let her know you are there and love her and will always be there for her. Maybe suggest she look into counseling. There are very good shelters in Baltimore that offer it to those trying to get away. This is a very good one http://www.hruth.org/.

192. We know about the hormone during pregnancy
but hadn't heard they were making progress with the research on its use for MS patients. It's the hormone that keeps a woman's body from rejecting the baby as a foreign object. MS symptoms are gone during pregnancy. I wondered why they wouldn't try to duplicate that hormone and use it as an MS drug -- it seemed so simple. It sounds like they're working on it.

160. You know, Rev, you are not the only minister going through this.
I saw it happen to another minister in another town I used to live in. He rubbed his congregation the wrong way because he had these crazy ideas about trying to bring in new people and about allowing the church facilities to be used by community groups that might, you know, leave a mess in the basement hall or something. About having an imam come in after 9/11 and talk about Islam and what Muslims really believe. About trying to do community outreach (no outreach, please, we're Lutherans). About trying to get someone interested in the church besides the rapidly shrinking and aging congregation it already had.

Of course they didn't like him. And of course they pushed him out by not being able to afford a full-time pastor anymore. Why couldn't they afford a full-time pastor anymore? Because the congregation kept SHRINKING because fresh blood was not welcome.

It was a shame. When I was in the hospital, he was there for me. And for a lot of other people.

170. Sadly, that is an all-too-common tale.
The churches that are dying have only themselves to blame.
I've told them if we didn't change our priorities, we'd have the best looking emptyest (sp?) church in town. And that's what's happening.

I basically told my committee that we obviously had a conflict in priorities, and that I wasn't interested in satisfying the grumblers (no pandering from me!!); and since they weren't budging, then it would probably be best for me to move on. THEN they said, "We don't want you to leave!"

Boo-fucking-Hoo (in my best Grinch voice).

155. There is some good news, SG.
With the new bishop and DS's, they've changed the way they think about making appoinments. They are now also holding CHURCHES accountable. That's something that never happened when I was in NC. There, whenever there was a problem, they simply moved the pastor.

So, I figure that's something, anyways.

Amen, SG.

163. I really appreciate that.
Five years ago, I was called to a meeting with the Bishop (now retired, thankfully). About 10 minutes into the meeting, it was apparent that she had already made up her mind, and wasn't going to listen to a thing I had to say. I'm still majorly pissed about that.

These guys are new, and have recently been pastors themselves. I have a feeling they will be at least a little symathetic.

These problems are not always the fault of the pastor. The congregation also has numbers on their side and if they want to they can freeze out the best of pastors. It's hardly a fair game in that sense.

are what children desperately need, and what communities can't function properly without.

It's what enables leaders to lead. It also gives complainers stuff to complain about.

If you're confident about your boundaries, it means you have confidence in your leadership.

188. No, that's just the latest complaint.
They are mad because:
1. I took time off to care for my Dad, empty his apartment, and work on four key points:
a) Clean the parsonage. (it's not dirty, it's cluttered - and, IMO, not an issue for them to consider. They can complain if I have damaged something - which I have not.)
b) Keep office hours. (kinda hard to do when you're off for a month, huh?)
c) Make a list of my duties as a pastor. (where do you begin? and how do you document "hours per month spent on counseling/funerals/hospital visits?)
d) Make an appointment to begin counseling.

All I could manage to do was keep office hours (since I've returned), and do a poor job in cleaning the house.

the picture I was looking for. It is of Ter in his bike clothes. Why was I looking for this picture? So I could send it you way with something like, "Be nice to Pope Cheesy or I'm going send him to kick your ass!" Want me to beg Ter to make a wrong turn and come kick some ass for you? Hell want me to try sneaking in the truck and come kick some ass for you?

Sending lots of :hug:s your way. Sounds like you are doing more than is humanly possible. Make your list of what is right and what is wrong. A list for you! Then decide what you want to bring up with whoever.

1. I took time off to care for my Dad, empty his apartment, and work on four key points:
a) Clean the parsonage. (it's not dirty, it's cluttered - and, IMO, not an issue for them to consider. They can complain if I have damaged something - which I have not.)

As you should of done and too bad if they can't handle it. Dad comes first and they can get over it if they don't like it.
If they don't like the clutter they can offer to help you get it under control. Then send them my way to help me. These days your place would probably look pristine compared to here.

b) Keep office hours. (kinda hard to do when you're off for a month, huh?)

As things return to normal (whatever that is) set some office hours convenient to you.

c) Make a list of my duties as a pastor. (where do you begin? and how do you document "hours per month spent on counseling/funerals/hospital visits?)

Get a weekly planner that breaks things down by the hour for each day and write everything down for a month. Even phone calls. Use that to make up a list of your duties and how much time it takes. Average it out if it is a slow month. You need to be keeping track of mileage etc. for taxes anyway.Keep it with you at all times. Let them see you write in it. If they are nosy enough to ask tell them what you are doing. Start with tomorrow even if you have to use a loose piece of paper. Hell be really mean and break it down to an hourly wage according to what you get paid. After you finish crying about how little you get paid make sure they see the breakdown. Most pastors are not getting rich and would make more money in the civilian world. It ain't called a calling for nothing.

d) Make an appointment to begin counseling.

Is this for you or for you to give counseling to others? If for you put it at the top of the list. You at least need a sounding board for all that you have been through and need a place to vent. If for others, do what you can when you can. Bet you already try to do more than you can with what you have. (Time and emotional wise.)

Sounds like the best pastor I know needs to do a sermon on what a real Christian is. The cowards will love it and hopefully the complainers would read the appropriate passages (in the bulletin in case they couldn't find them) and get a clue. You could slide in stuff relevant without calling out for weeks.

Hoping this makes sense as the dogs are crying as I type. Will be back after letting them out.
