(Mad at myself that there wasn't a new tape in when he started that beautiful intro. It was classic Olbermann.)

And I know that for all your *reformed* tendencies, you never did that, unless the cow way in the way of some mushrooms you wanted.

178. She's a bit shy.
When she was a kitten, she belonged to a friend of mine. Her boyfriend claimed there was an "accident," that she had fallen. She had a broken leg and concussion. Took her months to heal, and it left emotional scars (Meghan ditched the BF, and saved Binky's life).

So she bears emotional scars. She doesn't trust younger men, but has absolute love for those who are "more mature" (that is, over 40). She adores my dad. :)

My cats have incredible personality radar. Some people, they greet and walk away. Others they hide from. But the truly great people get the full welcome: circling around the person, rubbing their heads on your shoes, your legs, and if you're sitting, your hair.

Kitty love is indeed the best!

I have hit those things too often, and slept right through the cycle. It got so bad, I had to get a travel alarm clock to use for Sunday morning, just to make sure I didn't miss the regular clock.

Pretty lame, huh?

Now my internal clock is set better, so I just get up when I need to during the week, and use the alarm only on Sunday.

I sure wish my cats would give me a wake-up call. But they do come and tell me when I've been on the computer too long. :)

or whatever you call Martha's new digs? LOL.

Around here, that's a bit tricky. This week was the first time I could walk around the snow and get the lights off the bushes. Let's just say they're "indoors" but not stored.

Your mom is a wise woman. I grew up presuming that housework was everyone's job - we never had gender-assigned chores. I learned to cut the grass, and my brother knows how to do cleaning. Snow shovelling was a family event. When there's just two kids, everything gets cut down the middle.

25. I think Countdown is effectively pre-empted by the ongoing vigil, crisp --
. . . I love hearing him speaking off the script. NO ONE can do this like he can.

To your other question, Keith said at 6 that the announcement of the death was contradicted by the Vatican; and a guest soon after opined that if death occurred in the middle of the night the Vatican would WAIT UNTIL MORNING to announce it, being mindful of the announcement's importance and the sensitivity of many who would be hearing it.

31. He is actually asking questions of relevancy.
I realize a lot of this coverage is overkill (please, no pun intended), but at least Keith is asking the correct questions and not comparing the Pope to Bush or Reagan and all that crap that CNN was doing earlier today.

I like that he's talking more of the Pope's history, the plans for replacements and the geo-political implications instead of what the freepin' fundies think.

Oh - and it was Faux News, of course, who ran with "the Pope's dead" story and had to publically apologize for it. Not that that info isn't to be expected.

As to the Fox thing -- remember what I said yesterday about Murdoch messing in the editorial side of the NYPost, and their having to retract stuff as a result? This erroneous death announcement is undoubtedly MORE OF THE SAME.

75. Fox jumped the gun today and announced his death based
on a misinformed Italian press rumor, then CNN, and THEN both retracted that shortly thereafter, but not before the "Pope Has Died" thread was running really long today in LBN....LOTS OF CONFUSION. Skinner jumped in to change the subject line and left the thread!

Fortunately, the Network of Keith, took the high road and will only make announcements based on OFFICIAL Vatican word.

Whew, been a long day!

175. From a Non-Practicing Catholic
this thread is good for me too. Mostly because, as alot of DU threads proved to me today....I understand why I'm not practicing, but also understand why I'm still Catholic. A rough day for the religious wishy-washies...heh.

I may pop into the Catholic DU group for further understanding and to lend support also in the days ahead. Like my whole life dictates, Catholics rock, but they also drive me crazy too!

190. That's really great.
I had a course in Catholicism while in Div School (hey, I was even dating a Catholic at the time!).

I have tremendous respect for the Church, as well as much of its teachings. But for me, it was a reaffirmation of my own faith.

I often heard people say "once Catholic, always catholic" (capitalization intentional). I interpreted that to mean that one could leave the institution, but still remain within the church.

in my heart and soul...so to speak. So I won't take sides in the religion (DU) discussions, because I think it's a personal journey.

Much like I couldn't spew on the Schiavo threads, because, in my heart and soul, I couldn't let a child of MINE live like that for 15 years. :::shaking head for the parents::: I wouldn't let a pet of mine live 15 days like that...but it got religious :::sigh:::

I'm still pissed at our Congress for getting involved in the first place, which Keith so subliminaly refers to in his wonderful blogs!

And then there's the "Boston Personalism" theology of the late 19th, early 20th century... a progressive response to the fundamentalist reaction of Darwin.

Most people are under the false impression that the only response to Darwinism was Fundamentalism. The church also responded with Liberalism, and led the way to many reforms, not just in theological thinking, but also throughout society.

I really think it's all part of the whole. Some may call me a universalist, but I prefer to think of it as "inclusively enlightened."

John Wesley was pretty much squarely in the middle, an "evangelical-orthodox." (think of that as a liturgical charismatic). That's me. Worship is structured and ordered, yet also meaningful and full of life.

I know many here don't agree with the Pope's positions on reproduction, but I have great respect for this Pontiff. He has impressed me more than upset me. His reaching out to Jews and Muslims, helping free his homeland of Poland and standing up to people like the blivet on wars, in my mind, at least, out-weighs his lack-of-a-stance on the pedophiles in chruch, which I think he should have cleaned up.
His life is fascinating, though, and I have always thought his heart was in the right place, even if I disagree with some of his positions.

91. Yes, I'm an ex-Catholic too. There is much to respect in what this pope
did, and now in the time of his death, that's what to focus upon.

In another thread today soneone mentioned seeing photos of intense prayer services for him in a Muslim group in Palestine and in a Jewish temple in Israel. He also tried to restrain W from his killing both on the small scale (executions in Texas) and on the massive scale (Iraq). Long ago, when he first came to office, he was also a beacon of hope to Soviet-dominated Poland.

Yes, there is much I disagree with in what he has done and said, but also much to admire.

79. That's brilliant wording, captures the truth in few words without
too much negativity. There are such strong emotions about the doctrinal positions under this conservative pope, yet he did good things too. And he really had W's number. He personally called to ask W to reconsider some executions in Texas. As one poster in this interesting thread ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3402887 ) said, "He personally called Gov Bush on several different occassions pleading with him not to execute certain people, some of whom were mentally retarded or minors when they comitted crimes. Bush basically told him to fuck off each time. No, he did not like Bush, no matter what Bush told American Catholics."

Keith really has such an amazing sense of HOW to present news, combined with a knowledge of what is important.

You know, I wonder if they put him in for Big Anchor during the pope's death because of the very fine job he did, calm and compassionate and professional, around the 9/11 tragedy. The man isn't all funny stories, SOMEBODY in the power structure at MSNBC has realized.

He also did a very fine job with Mrs. Schiavo's death - grave and dignified and spot-on the relevant aspects. Who else could handle this great, and for so many very sad, transition in the papacy?

He's the best, there's no other anchor these days that's even close.

70. Wanna come over and do mine?
I couldn't do my fall clean-up when I dislocated my shoulder and all of the beds are full of leaves. I think it will take me until July to get them all cleaned out and get all the dead stuff cut down. I can't do too much at a time because I don't want to overdo it with my arm, so it will be very slow work -- an hour or so at a time probably.

workout. Sorry to hear about your arm. Have any kids in the neighborhood need some cash? Used to have a little guy around here started at 8 raking and weeding. Was affordable and a hard worker. Most people paid him more than he ask. Most of us hired him because he was so cute and wanted to earn his own money so bad instead of because we needed him to do it.

I've been debating about hiring a gardening service just for the initial clean-up. It would sure take a load off for me. I may ask around this week and get some prices.

Between my arm and the fact that I had bad sciatica problems last year before I went for physical therapy I really shouldn't be doing all that bending and lifting.

I would like each of us to find one or two news stories that lift the spirits and strengthen hope. For example, the one on Rwanda I posted in this thread a little earlier. If we started a clubhouse thread for collecting these, we could post the collection in GD tomorrow evening. I think it would be a good thing all around. I know I've been sad these last few days, and it feels like a time to exercise those "hope muscles" - work to lift spirits.

What do you think, bleev?

I'll think about what I'd add to the list.

My high spots of the week aren't really feel-good stories, but I'm glad that the judicial system worked for TS, and that the commission on the Iraq intelligence came back to blast it.

If I remember something uncomplicated, like the rhino that adopted the goat after the tsunami, I'll let you know! Though I know would denounce that as unholy.

Just pick ones that especially resonate for you, no matter what they are. I truly believe that will work the best, and it will also cheer you the most. All of us will overlap some in our choice of stories, but there will be differences too because each of us reacts most strongly to different issues.

So please, choose what speaks most strongly to your own sense of hope.

that could have something to do with the small crowds.

I wonder about the lights on in the other areas of his suite. They reported that they shred his documents and such almost right away. Perhaps they have begun that process?

And what's with hitting him on the head three times. Not to be a smart ass at such a sad occassion, but, just who was the first person to do that and preclaim it a good thing? Wouldn't a mirror under his nose be more humane than three wacks in the head? They could have used a feather before mirrors were invented and gotten the same info as three shots to the head with a silver hammer. Could that have been what the Beatles really meant re: Maxwells Silver Hammer?

These are just the type of crazy thoughts this non-catholic has been having all day.

that they consider any of his papers to be personal and they might want the info to remain only known to him and god?

They also smash his ring. Again, don't know if it is so no other Pope will ever wear that ring or if they are breaking some sort of bond between his body and his spirit. I am just speculating on why they would shred the documents and smash the ring. If any one knows why they do these things, please share.

They don't have to hammer him on the head three times and shout his name anymore.

As recently as 40 years ago, the Camerlengo did this by tapping the pope's head three times with a small hammer and shouting his family name close to his ear, but that colorful ritual is not mentioned in the 1996 revisions made by Pope John Paul II to streamline the process, and referred to by the opening Latin words of the document as "Universi Domini Gregis..." -- The shepherd of the Lord's whole flock...

However, the Camerlengo is still required to slip the papal ring off the dead pope's finger, and smash the official papal seal.

http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20031001-043419-2720r

The reason they smash the ring is symbolic - the end of his authority.

Hope that helps! :)

They just half-ass do their jobs and there probably isn't a Catholic among them - or, if there is, he or she is probably one of those fundie Catholics who doesn't realize how progressive this Papacy is (yes, there are some aspects that weren't, but Pope John Paul II is/was truly representative of Vatican II, which first allowed mass in languages other than Latin and allowed the priest to face the audience - that kind of "progressive").

be buried alive.
This was to ensure against that.

I'm not sure why, really - but my mother would know. It's too late to call her and ask, though. I'll try to remember to ask her tomorrow at my son's soccer game or maybe see if its in my books somewhere - but I rather suspect it was to prevent against burying a Pope alive or something.

Some sort of superstition, in any case.

It's really kind of appalling how very little the media knows about religious matters. They make superficial attempts to inform, but often get distracted by using high profile figures, rather than thoughtful theologians. No wonder people have such a negative view of the church!

One exception: Jim Wallis. I hope his stature grows...he is wonderful.

TOTALLY AWESOME!!"

Okay, that's not Botany's. But this is:

...... on the point of land that overlooked Gull Bay. The cottage was part of the
grounds of the old light house which had for years had warned the ships about the
rocky shoals which were part of Gull Bay. The red wine warmed her and the
fresh ocean breeze tantalized her senses. She also thought Martha Stewart was
a "know it all rich bitch," but also wondered if Martha would not be jealous of the
way the "New Dawn" roses cascaded over the trellis above the gate to the cottage's
postage stamp yard.

She also looked out as Sean Kennedy back from college mowed the lawn. For
all her sophistication she looked at his butt and said out loud, using her "Lucky
Charms" wee person's voice, "Magically Delicious." My how those three years away
at school had filled him out. She looked as his rugby shirt and wonder if
being in a scrum and rucking were fun or painful? To her he looked parched
and she thought maybe I should mix up a batch of "Planter Punch" (2 oz. of
Meyers' rum, fresh o.j., a splash of grenadine and cracked ice per rock glass)
and take it to him? After all she hated to see him sweat in the crimson glow
of sunset without some refreshment.

BTW Sean Kennedy loves Goldens

235. A lot of sadness out there tonight, Sparky - let's enjoy the good company
here by the fire.

And please note the KOEB project I'm suggesting downstream - collecting positive, genuinely hopeful news stories in a KOEB Group thread and then sharing them with DU. We all need some serious spririts-lifting, I think. I know I do, I've been feeling sad the last few days and I think the news is one reason why. So much negative and so little positive has been seen.

Glad to have your good company, Sparky!

250. Sure is. I'm so glad we got our clubhouse, so we aren't out in the cold
during the weekends! I haven't been a Catholic in a very long time, but this somber death watch, the second this week, superimposed on so much bad news courtesy of the neocons, is hard to take without sharing with like minds.

Tulips in the garden are definitely growing again, puffed out and over 4 inches now. Blooming snowdrops with preoccupied bees in the local tiny nature preserve. Lots of water flowing, ducks are pairing, geese are getting more active about the pecking order. Saw our resident muskrat, quite close. No skunk cabbage yet, though, and the birdsong hasn't gotten loud yet.

Spring is coming. Not much old piled snow left now. More light, too. I'm glad this sadness isn't hitting in fall, that would be much harder to take.

Can you see what Keith is doing? Or are you listening through the KOEB like I am?

265. I'm glad you like the photos. Without really planning a campaign of it,
I'm trying to find ways to lift spirits. This year, or maybe I should start wih Nov 3, has been so hard to take. Even in good times, the news media concentrate on awful news because that gets the most attentive audience. But now - you really have to work to find the positive stories. It's like there's a glorying in death and despair and hatred of all kinds. It's so erosive. So, I am wanting to find ways to counter it.

I'm very visually-oriented, though I respond to sounds too. So photos are an easy pick for reminding of beauty and the natural world, away from the ugly scenes. I have enjoyed sharing what I've found on the web with the KOEB. I need to get back to painting, too. With the sadness, I've stopped that and now I need to restart.

I'm so relieved that it's spring instead of fall or winter or even late summer. Maybe I'll go get some sugar-snap pea seeds tomorrow and set about planting them. I think it's about time for that, and I'd love to see them coming up. I bet my landlord's two small daughters would enjoy it too. I recall when my daughter was small, she watched the few sugar-snap pea vines like a hungry hawk and many times I had to pick the three or four she declared were ready and run cook them for her right away. Good memories.

I seem to be rambling here. I guess it's that kind of a night. Thanks for your company.

279. Sounds good to me. By the way, did you ever see this gardening company?
http://www.gardensalive.com/Default.asp?bhcd2=1112429528

They're amazing - all natural products, many of them living organisms like fungi or nematodes or insects. Thanks to them and their anti-fungus (by competing with a beneficial fungus) and special tomato mineral cocktail (I never imagined they needed that much calcium and other metal ions!), I was finally able to raise a good crop of tomatoes last year after two years of miserable failures. (In previous years I had fine crops, and it was apparently a combination of fungus infection and calcium depletion that did them in.) I found out about them from a fascinating book I read about earthworms. (It was one of those you see on the library "new books" shelf and just have to check out because your curiosity and whimsy take over.)

Anyway, I recommend looking through their products.

and if he is coming back at 11 chances are he will be around for the announcement. What is the time difference between Rome and here (EST for me) They have been saying as how the Pope's death would more than likely not be announced until after sunrise there. Wouldn't that be around midnight or so here? Went and looked its 4:26 am in Rome now so that would put him at the desk for sunrise.

Rwandan Hutu Rebels Denounce Genocide, Halt War

Thu Mar 31, 5:06 PM ET
World - Reuters
By Crispian Balmer

ROME (Reuters) - Rwanda's main Hutu rebel group announced on Thursday they were ending their war against Rwanda and for the first time denounced the 1994 genocide of Tutsis that has been blamed on many of their members.

A delegation representing the rebel organization, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), made the announcement after secret negotiations at the Sant'Egidio religious community in the heart of Rome.

"The FDLR condemns the genocide committed against Rwanda and their authors," FDLR President Ignace Murwanashyaka said, reading from a statement. "Henceforward, the FDLR has decided to transform its fight into a political struggle."

Hutu rebels are accused of taking part in the massacre of 800,000 Rwandan Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 1994. Until Thursday, many FDLR fighters had denied genocide occurred, calling the killings tit-for-tat attacks.

152. Yes, and by human nature, when there is so much unhappiness and fear
of what is happening in our country and the world, it's easiest to focus on yet more tales of woe. As everyone knows, they dominate commercial news anyway - it's what sells.

So let's work to find just one or two GOOD, POSITIVE news stories and post them in a thread in the clubhouse - I'll start it shortly. The act of looking and finding should feel good too. The stories are out there, we just haven't been seeing them.

I think all of DU needs to see something like this. It's such a sad, scary time, and we must keep our spirits up for all the fights ahead.

We've had so much depressing news of late that hearing something like this gives you hope. As Galen, one of my favorite characters from the TV show Crusade said:

155. Elsewhere in this thread I've introduced the idea of a KOEB project:
Each of us finding and posting one or two (or more if they're really good) POSITIVE, HOPE-ENHANCING news stories in a thread I'll start shortly in the clubhouse. Then, when we've collected some good ones, we can post in GD tomorrow or the next day and spread the hope.

There is good news out there, and we all need to hear about it. The unremitting gloom and death has me down, and I'm not the only one by a long shot. Time to exercise those "hope muscles" and lift our spirits. Then we can share with DU and spread it around.

What do you think?

I think the death watch and fighting over the Terri Schiavo mess and now with the Pope is just so very depressing.

Plus we are being assaulted day in and day out with Shrub and his minions and their march to disassemble this country. We need something to lift us up. After all, Spring is the time of renewal and it's time all of us renew our spirits. It can do nothing but help all on DU

I like the idea.

When we have enough, we'll put them together in a post in GD for all of DU to share. We need to celebrate life and look to the future with hope and energy. And then we need to share it. I feel strongly that there's a great need for this, and I hope you'll join in and be cheered by the process. One or two stories each would add up to quite a few!

sure you'll understand. Something with the tip of his tongue being turned into something else, like a long unrolling sign made like one of those whistling party favors. Lots of interesting choices for what to write on the uncurling sign. And that's just ONE possibility. I am firmly NOT thinking of our Keef with a sticky froggy tongue going after something buzzing around. Nope, not me!

It's a transition, which is a mystical, magical time. In old times, it was the transition times like this and the turnings of the year like the solstices, that were associated with the thinning of barriers with the mysterious unknown.

And I'm back too. For a little while. I'm betting Keef used his break to grab a bite to refuel, shower and change (those lights are HOT and he's already had a long day), and get ready for what could be the intense moment of reporting the pope's death. Have to be ready to do it right, and if anyone can, Keith can.

300. Oh yes, you MUST get a digital camera. Mine is nearly 4 years old
and quite basic. (You do need a good lens that zooms.) It changes your life when you can share so easily and have no hesitation to take photographs because they are free. It changes the way you see and helps you and others to remember. It's WONDERFUL! For family and friends, the sharing aspect is profound.

303. Do you have any recommendations?
I have a HP operating system, and wondered if that would be a good way to go.

I'm also willing to pay for a good quality camera, but I'm not exactly swimming in the dough right now. (how's that for a mixed metaphor?)

307. Mine is an Olympus with an excellent zoom lens. But there are some
great new models out there now. Mine is about 4 years old and still working perfectly, so for now I can't really justify getting a new one though I've been thinking I should start opening my eyes on the possibility. I've heard some good things about some of the new Minolta models. Basically, we should both see if we can find people who recently did the research and find out what they found.

For me, the features I like the best about my camera is that it is a size such that I can easily carry it around for sudden, unplanned photos, I like its clamshell closure so that it is protected, and its zoom lens makes framing shots MUCH more flexible than it would be without the zoom. It also takes great macro photos of very small things, which is one of my fascinations. It's very easy to use and the resolution is high enough for printing 5x7 and even occasionally 8x10 prints. Newer cameras have the optionof much higher resolution, but honestly I have rarely wished for it. Those huge files take a LOT of space! I would like a more powerful zoom to get better nature photos, but I've really gotten by amazingly well with my little Olympus.

So we need to find a digital camera afficiando - there's a Photography Group here at DU, and I bet they'dlove to dispense some wise advice!

352. If you are thinking about getting
a digital camera you might want to look at these sites. The biggest thing to figure out what you are going to do with it. For on-line and email you want smaller pictures( less ppi---pixel per inch.) For printing you want larger (ppi to tranlate into more dpi---dots per inch), you also need to have an idea of how big your prints would be. Any digital camera should work with any computer, though a cd burner and large harddrive would be good. I have a Nikon D100, got the hub a Nikon D70 fir Christmas. I tried his out and it is as good though for some reason (maybe used to it) I prefer the D100. As far as lens go, optical zoom is what you look at. Digital zoom is useless unless you like pixelated pictures. If you have a small camera store around (not a chain)many of them will let you try out different cameras in store to see the differences. For anyone with a film slr I always suggest they look into the same brand dslr and see if their lens from the film with work on the digital. Saves lots of money in lens.

Lots of info on cameras and types. http://www.steves-digicams.com/

Very good info on mega-pixels.

. . . night. Yesterday it was Scarborough, Scarborough, Scarborough. I wondered why the Countdown re-air was getting stiffed -- but they were already into continuing-coverage mode, unbeknownst to me.

It's a good humane arrangement if they keep doing it this way: two hours off between 9 and 11 to eat, freshen up and decompress -- then another couple or few hours on duty -- then 15 hours to sleep and write before the next night, which will be a short one.

That's Club Med compared to the murderous pace everyone endured at ESPN.

I'm a little put out that they don't divvy out more primetime to the women of MSNBC. I've written to the network about it, in fact. They're as smart and as professional as the men (though no one touches KO, of course).

258. Reading about the contrast between other broadcasters and Keith upthread,
I am thinking: what if in the future he becomes more prominent primariily because people believe they can TRUST him, unlike everybody else on the tube? Sort of like Walter Cronkite in a way. He's got some gray hair now, but he still looks more like a sportscaster. Maybe he will be allowed to grow in stature this way because he has something people are so hungry for: honesty and visible genuiineness combined with balance and humor.

There is so much despair and anger. So I hope the utter contrast between when Keith is in front of the camera and when anyone else is up there in the same place is grasped by some people who make decisions about such things.

Keith never fails to ... well, in THIS crowd I'd better NOT say "rise to the occasion"...

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 12:13 AM by WhirlyGirl
. . . The first -- since all the cable networks would most likely opt for continuing coverage of the pope's condition -- was that if it people turned to Keith at this hour on account of his dignified style and penetrating questions to guests, it could be the making of his conception as a complete newsman.

The second, somewhat unrelated thought was that, in light of all this talk of dying, it's fortunate for me that I'd found someone significantly YOUNGER than me to admire.

Someone who, please God, will STAY WITH US and NOT LEAVE US for a long, long time.

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 12:45 AM by Nothing Without Hope
I think he caught serious attention with his handling of the 9/11 tragedy - and won an award for it. His treatments of the TS and the pope deaths will reach new people and remind those who recall how he projects strength, honesty, and compassion when people most desperately need it.

Many people who are "funny" use that as a shield and can't turn it off because they fear the vulnerability or because of habit or because they don't know any other way to act. Keith is different. I do think his humor has some shielding element in it, but it is also an effective weapon against hypocrisy and crimes of all sorts. But he doesn't NEED it - he can take it off and be grave and serious when the situation calls for it. And his honesty and humanity are so clear then - and people really need that. There is so much fragmentation and isolation and fear in our country, people need someone they can believe. There hasn't been anyone like that on TV since Walter Cronkite retired. Will be interesting to see if he matures into a role like that: a humorous, snarky, clear-eyed, awesomely bright Walter Cronkite. What a concept!

That's not the full quote, but it's all my frazzled brain could remember at the time.

I liked the interview with the priest who talked about how the Church would quickly pass from mourning to joy, in fact, celebration.

328. I'm in perfect agreement on that - Here's a beautiful quote on death
Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place. Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.  Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home. --Tecumseh

330. Ok, there's some scuttlebutt . . . (and Keith's off the air for now) --
-- Before signing off, Keith reported that a Romanian publication has announced both the birth AND DEATH dates of the pope . . . and that the AP has picked the onfo up from the Romanian publication.

IN ADDITION, Keith said that in the past few minuites there had been some . . . I guess you could say, some chatter . . . that the Vatican Information Office would be making an announcement at 3am our time. And that the cardinals were heading for Rome, but there was no confirmation that they'd been formally "summoned."

So that's how things stand at 2am Eastern.

Tradition is that officials close the massive door under a portico off St. Peter's Square when a Pope dies and keep it shut until a new pontiff is elected. — AP

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 02:40 AM by Nothing Without Hope
It was one of the Renaissance popes, Leo X, and it's quite a story. Here are editorial reviews at Amazon.com on one of the books written about the pope's elephant, called, straightforwardly enough, "The Pope's Elephant":

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0140288627/qid=1112427263/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-7816307-8571037?v=glance&s=books
Amazon.com
In early 16th century Rome, at the height of the Italian Renaissance, when artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo thrived in the Holy City, the decadent court of Pope Leo X was a place where visitors could find pleasures and entertainment more exotic than anything they had previously imagined. Among the Pope's great joys was his menagerie of exotic animals, and the prize of his collection was an Indian elephant named Hanno, presented to him by the King of Portugal. The Pope's Elephant by Silvio A. Bedini, historian emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, describes Hanno's powerful effect on the Papal Court and on the Roman citizenry. This elephant--trained to kneel, dance, weep, and trumpet on command--led parades and entertained at public festivals and was commemorated in paintings, poetry, and sculpture. For Romans, Hanno became the preeminent symbol of the alluring Orient; for Pope Leo's detractors, the elephant became a symbol of Roman corruption. Bedini's rigorous research and eager enthusiasm for his subject and his judicious selection of whimsical illustrations make reading The Pope's Elephant a quirky and delightful pastime. --Michael Joseph Gross

Product Description:
An "utterly charming"(The Observer) look at the white Indian elephant who became the darling of Pope Leo X and Renaissance Europe.

In 1514, Rome, the Eternal City, was the center of the Chrisitian world and home and workshop to Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo. It was also the city of Pope Leo X, the pleasure-loving pontiff whose court was infamous for its excess, frivolity and impropriety, as well as for its newly-arrived white elephant Hanno. Hanno became a star feature in processions and festivals, and the subject of countless paintings, sculptures and fountains. In this fascinating glimpse at a forgotten sidenote to history, Silvio A. Bedini gives us an elephant's-back view of early modern Europe and the inner workings of the Vatican at the height of its influence. Charmingly written with dozens of accompanying photographs and illustrations, The Pope's Elephant will delight readers just as Hanno delighted the people of Rome five centuries ago.

"A work of extraordinary scholarship. . . . Crisply written and amply illustrated, it shines a bright light on two short lives, that of Leo and Hanno, and that of the age they embodied."-- The Literary Review

He opens his eyes when spoken to, and slips in and out of consciousness.

But they said that yesterday, didn't they?

Last night I missed the first 2 hours, not realizing he was on, and then missed a good chunk of the rest tagging along with the husband on a spontaneous trip to Lowe's. And tonight I've got tickets to see Jon Stewart when KO's on.

The trip to Lowes was funny though - everyone at the hardware store was weirdly nice to us. The paint mixer guy mixed a gallon of paint for me, and immediately marked it down like one of the mismatched paints, and was joking around with us for a while - as was the cashier.

When I got home, I realized I was still wearing a Kerry shirt that I put on earlier when I thought I was just gonna be hanging out at home all day.
