ABC NEWS ANCHOR PETER JENNINGS DIAGNOSED WITH LUNG CANCER
Bloomberg
April 5, 2005

ABC's "World News Tonight" anchor Peter Jennings was diagnosed with lung cancer yesterday and will continue working when possible during his treatment, he said in an e-mail to coworkers.

Jennings, 66, will begin chemotherapy next week, he said in an e-mail confirmed today by ABC News spokeswoman Cathie Levine. Walt Disney Co.'s ABC News anchors Charles Gibson, Elizabeth Vargas and others will fill in for Jennings when he can't work, ABC News President David Westin said in an e-mail.

"There will be good days and bad, which means that on some days I may be cranky and on some days really cranky," Jennings, a former smoker, wrote in the e-mail.

Jennings quit smoking "a number of years ago," Levine said.

1. yes, they all think they're indestructible
right up until they find out they're not, and then it's too fucking late. Keef, I'll stop complaining about the gray suit if you'll give up tobacco. Honest. O8)

2. OK... I have a little gripe about this.
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 01:29 PM by Clark2008
I honestly believe (and some British scientists' new research proves) that smoking, per se, does not cause cancer.
I think that it aggravates a pre-disposed gene that causes cancer, making the development of cancer more likely in smokers WHO HAVE THE GENE.
My concern, of course, is that we've spent all this money and time blaming smoking without researching the genetics behind it. I think the ultimate cure will be found in genetic makeup.
This would also help explain the number of people who A.) Smoke forever and never get cancer (lung or otherwise) and B.) Never smoke and still get lung cancer. (I had a friend who died of lung cancer at 27 and never smoked a day in her life.)
That said, I'm in no way saying smoking is good for you - I'm just tired of it getting blamed for everything.

OK... I know Keith smokes cigars, but does he "smoke" smoke?
Most people don't really inhale cigars to the degree they do cigarettes.

3. Gripe away, you're entitled! -- but lung cancer isn't the only danger . .
. . . The chemicals in tobacco are corrosive to everything they touch.
Which includes his adorable mouth, and everything contained therein.

And the vocal apparatus which thrills us so.

I don't plan to pursue this ad nauseam --

-- but they make PESTICIDES out of tobacco, facryinoutloud. Tells you SOMETHING.

If I had the gift Keith has, I'd guard it the way an opera singer does!

5. okay, remember the opera singer schtick they used to do
on Saturday Night Live, back when Adam Sandler was on the show?

I just got a flash of Keith doing something like that.

4. it's true that cigar smokers do seem less likely
to get lung cancer than cigarette smokers, probably because they don't inhale in the same way. Instead it's cancer of the throat, mouth, and lips. Yay, throat cancer, just what a newscaster needs.

I think almost all types of cancer are multifactorial and which genes you have determine your susceptibility or resistance. Given the number of people who have developed cancers after exposure to tobacco, I'm not willing to bet my health that I've got the "good" genes -- especially since lung cancer is only one of the health problems associated with smoking.

7. Lung cancer is'nt the only life threatening disease one gets from smoking.
Many more people die of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema. My father smoked cigars for years and then quit in his fifties, he still has mild COPD and recently had a bout with bacterial pneumonia. He also uses an inhaler. If he had kept smoking he would not be alive at age 75.
