KOEB Meeting 12/9/05: The "Read It and Weep" Edition
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 08:14 PM by BerryBush
Imagine having the opportunity today to meet this:

and now read about how one person paid $8,390 in an eBay auction to do so...
...and, well, to do other stuff, too...
...and GAVE AWAY THE CHANCE, so a couple of Iraq War vets could have some fun instead:

Clout | Flavia & the vets: A New York story

THE WINNER of the Flavia Colgan auction on eBay is a Washington real estate tycoon - who promptly gave up his prize.

Joseph E. Robert Jr. shelled out $8,390 to spend this evening with Colgan, MSNBC pundette and Clout-created celebrity, at gala Pennsylvania Society events in New York City.

But he's not going. Instead, he asked that the night on the town be given to a couple of Iraq War veterans.

Robert wants to treat the vets because his son, Cpl. Joseph E. Robert III, recently completed a tour of duty in Fallujah.

To recap, Colgan, at the instigation of the Web site politicspa.com, auctioned herself to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Central Pennsylvania.

Who gets the prize? Former Army Capt. Jon Soltz, of western Pennsylvania and Marine Reserve Maj. Mike Zacchea, of Long Island.

Soltz and Zacchea were to be limoed to the MSNBC TV studio in Secaucus, N.J., to meet program hosts Tucker Carlson, Joe Scarborough and Keith Olbermann. They'll watch Colgan tape a show with Carlson.

Then it's back to Manhattan tonight for a steak dinner and a bottle of Dom Perignon, a taping of Janeane Garofalo's "Air America" radio show and a round of parties at the Waldorf-Astoria.

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/13370520.htm

Now, the question is...if YOU shelled out this kind of dough for the chance to meet Keith (yeah, the other stuff is OK, but to MEET KEITH...)...the question is...could YOU be kind and give it up to our fighting heroes?

Heh. Heh. Heh. Me? I'd be saying "Guys, go party with Flavia. I'll stay here with Keith."

Enjoy Countdown!

25. This is the tie we bought for Keith's birthday last January.
He wore it one time, then it disappeared.
We were convinced that he gave it away. Well, THEY were.
I still believed that he had it encased in glass at home. :loveya:

Gold Neat was sold out.
Crispi's notes:

Here's the note -- it had to be QUITE short, there was a very small space to type it.

Happy Birthday. From your viewers at Democratic Underground. It's much better than a tin foil hat!

(Note just to us: No floaty hearts were included, heh heh heh!)

P.S. Please keep the tie choice on the down-low ... that will probably enhance our chances of getting it worn on the air, don't you think? And if he SHOULD wear it... only the most discrete squealing, K, all? :D

Tie first worn on Feb. 1

not the one we eventually got.

Crispini and I spent about two hours on Yahoo IM narrowing that down to the stripey one, which was everyone's second or third choice.

Gold Neat was the one I thought looked like a Young Republican. :)

He's probably wearing the tie to let us know he doesn't really need another one and thanks for thinking of him but no stalking please and another in person delivery of the tie is not all that necessary. Either that or all the other ties were at the cleaners.

179. did you end up having to take it in person, because of the
short time frame? I know we'd hoped to avoid that... oh, well. In any case, the Tie sighting might be related to something else -- did anyone hear him with Dan Patrick on Friday? I got interrupted just as Dan was saying something about hearing that there have been complaints about KO's wardrobe at MSNBC and they were going to talk about that later and Keith said something about stripes with stripes do go together but I didn't catch what happened after the break. Maybe the tie was related to that...

196. Keith was saying that
his tailor told him that stripes-on-stripes is the new fashion trend or something. He was saying this because Dan was saying HE was getting e-mails (Dan, not Keith) every day from some guy who watched Keith on Countdown and didn't like his wardrobe and was e-mailing DAN to tell Keith to stop wearing stripes on stripes!

I have to admit, I'm with the man. I think Keith's tailor is nuts if he thinks lots of different KINDS of stripes go together--or that stripes and grids go together, or whatever. I may be a fashion dropout, but I just think they clash.

Of course, Keith doesn't care. He wears whatever his tailor tells him is hot!

began a very controversial special hunting season on bears. Seems they are scaring too many exurbanites. Umm, they were there first folks. It's times like these that I truly experience the shame of being from NJ.

78. ok, this is just too bizarre.
Last week I could watch Countdown but I had lost my star so I couldn't post on KOEB.
This week, I got my star back, but for the second day in a row my teevee plays every other station except my MSNBC channel. I just had a conversation with a very nice Canadian liberal cable guy who scheduled a repair visit for me this coming Thursday. He sent a signal to my box (sounds vaguely obscene) and I saw Keith's face for about 1 nanosecond. Repairguy says he doesn't know what could be wrong, he's never heard of only one channel going down. I found out he watches the daily show though and so I told him to watch Keith. He said that the inside of the cable wire might have a worn cable connection. I asked 'what is the likelihood that the cable is worn on the only channel I watch, and not any of the others?' We are both nonplussed.

So. Guess I'll read the thread and catch up that way, can't even watch the rerun. Keef just must not love me anymore and instructed that my MSNBC cable wire be disconnected. Sob.

I'm a Plamaholic so I'm especially jonesing for KO's insightful discussions about Fitz, Luskin, Rove and Novaks. Any idea what role Kim Novak may have played in any of this. I'm certainly getting 'Vertigo' reading all the twists and turns of this case and trying to guess where it's going.

who have now lost all respect for KO because he claims to have stopped being a conspiracy theorist? Apparently you cannot be considered an intelligent, rational human being by some people unless you have your JFK :tinfoilhat: firmly affixed in place and it is picking up the exact same signals theirs is. Sheesh. And these people think freepers are intolerant!

As for me, I have no theories. I figure I'm not going to find out what truly happened in THAT mess until I'm dead and God reveals the secrets of the universe to me. Until then, I'd just as soon NOT spend lots of time studying which direction someone's brain matter is spattering and blowing in on some old movie film. (Did I mention that some people on said thread included frames and moving images from the Zapruder film in their posts to "prove" their points--WITHOUT any warnings about having included a disturbing image?)

103. An Open Letter to Keith Olbermann:
Dear Keith,

I'd just like to take a moment and look back at your last year of broadcasts and make an observation.

While we here have all lauded you in various ways, for various things, over the last 13 months, one thing at this point is clear: you have continually exceeded our high expectations of you.

Your intelligence, your humaneness, stemming perhaps from the fact that you are not trying to do your best imitation of what a newsman is supposed to be; you are simply being that, and in being yourself, remain human and accessible. You therefore make the news human and accessible in a way that other broadcast journalists rarely do.

We here are the kind of people who are obsessed with news, and media, and politics. We have high expectations for critical thought, authentic curiosity, and humility. You meet these, and by breaking new ground and integrating the most serious stories with the most absurd, and looking at the news of the moment as reflected off compelling pieces of previous history and culture, you've created the next model for network news. Unfortunately, network news isn't smart enough to know it.

But that's okay with us. We want you to have a full hour. Actually, nobody here would complain about an hour and a half.

So, thanks for the good work. Keep it up. It means a lot to people who really care about American democracy.

and I feel the same. While I'd love for Keith to have the honor and recognition of being a network newscaster, I'm not sure he needs the pressure in his life. Nor am I sure he'd be happy having only 20-odd minutes to report the news--or that I would be. Nor, I admit, would I want to share him with the millions. :loveya:

I kind of like Keith being our little secret...so long as his career isn't truly suffering and he's getting to do mostly what he wants to do. (as in, make us happy by being so great at giving us news :loveya:)

I received a manuscript of a Summary Plan Description this morning that has to be laid out and to the client by Monday -- it will be about 80-100 pages and will need to be proofread and edits made. No way could I have accomplished all that today and Monday, so I'll go in tomorrow and proof it at home on Sunday.

I freed up about 15 hours a week dropping some volunteer/fundraising cooking for 75 kids a day - I'm doing 7 more days of it, then I'm free! Free! two hours a night of Keith. Great tie-ku LW. I am out of practice with keeping up with the thread and watching so just watched Keith. I am convinced Fitzmas is the gift that just keeps giving. Can't wait until they are all caught, shamed and jailed.

I am off to get stuff done. My cat Ayja has been at the vets all week since he wasn't eating and was wanting more attention than usual. I could only get two feet away before he had crying fits instead of four so I knew something was wrong. We were worried he had crystals and renal failure. Seems he has diabetes so they got him stabilized and eating. Started him on insulin last night and he is doing well so he gets to come home tomorrow after we learn how to give him his shots twice a day. Who would of thought diabetes would be good news but at least he can live a healthy life and stick around a few more year.

Night all, have a great weekend.

172. Well, Ferretessa, glad things are not too bad for the kitty.
Also that you are still in possession of both arms.

One thing I'd like to add: as much as I'd love for Keith's sake to see him have the prestige of a network, I'd hate to see him have to do anything that would take him away from being able to do his radio hour five days a week with Dan Patrick. I think he would, too--and if offered such a situation, he just might have the great good sense to turn it down, realizing there are some things that money and prestige can't buy.

"The opportunity to jaw about baseball and any other sport you want for an hour a day on the radio with a man who's as close to you as a brother, and act like a couple of 13-year-olds into the bargain? Priceless."

It really is in the basement, with no window and we had to stop live feeds and itunes use. Fifty plus computers in one big room playing a different song on each was way too much for sanity. Some mornings I get there and it is still dark, and dark again when I leave. Makes a person wonder if the sun ever came up. But I do like what I am doing, and learning lots that these people pay to learn and rarely if ever am bored. He was more concerned about getting petted. He missed me and heard the car pull up at the vets according to the vet. The vet knew I was there because the Siamese yowl started until he got to see me. He is now rearranging the ferrets while reminding them of their place in the bed.

at least with Nefer and Battle, doing insulin was way easier than giving pills or oral liquids (can you say pink spots in the cracks of the woodwork that will be there until the end of time)? The insulin syringes have a fairly thin needle, which isn't too painful and you kind of scruff 'em at the back of the neck and stick them there.

relieved at hearing their cat has diabetes, but with all the things it could of been this is treatable. Might take a couple weeks to get his dosage exactly right. Second shot went ok too. The vet said with proper diet and the insulin it could resolve itself. Keeping him out of the other cats food and the ferret food is a challenge. The other cats are suffering since I put up their food when he is out of the room. Oh and keeping the ferrets out of his food is hilarious. Its up out of reach but they are trying hard to reach it. If they get together and move furniture I am in trouble.
I just need to get better at the needle part since it takes a bit longer because I am extra cautious.

208. it's early days yet
you'll get used to the needle. It's the food routine that will get old, fast. And if the ferrets ever get opposable thumbs, you're sunk. :-)

(Could you plug earphones into your computer to listen to stuff at work?)

182. Sorry to hear about the diabetes, but it can be treated
getting an occasional urine sample to test can be fun, though. :7 On the whole, I'd rather have to deal with diabetes than FUS.

202. FUS. Been there, done that, cat almost died at age 2.
It was scary. He was at death's door by the time I got him to the vet. Luckily, he made it. But from that time forward, he became an indoor cat, because I needed to control his diet and know what he was eating. He was worse for getting into trash than a raccoon. Would eat literally any food but onions and fruit, and was insane for cheese (his eyes lit up like a maniac whenever he was near it). LOVED popcorn and crackers. Thought styrofoam packing material was popcorn, and would eat that too, then throw it up. I couldn't keep any kind of packaging in the house with him or he'd eat it.

204. That can be scary , we got
lucky, though seems strange to say it. Since the vet was originally worried he was in renal failure. He looked that bad that fast. Everyone was happy to get him home. The ferrets went nuts, dooking, running and jumping all around him. Woke up this morning to a cat asleep next to me with five ferrets slightly under him and 1 blanket and surrounding him. Guess its ok that way since the blanket is between him and the ferret teeth and he likes the extra warmth.

210. Aw, that's sweet. LOL!
What's sweet for me? The new device I purchased for keeping my cats away from the Christmas tree! LOL!

It's a little can of compressed (cold!) air with a motion detector and an alarm. Whenever one of the cats comes near the tree, it beeps and emits a blast of cold air.

I've had the opportunity to see each of them, in sequence, go bolting across the room after having encountered its wrath.

Now I can go to bed tonight and to work tomorrow secure in the knowledge that my little "sentry" will protect my tree and teach my cats that "It knows when you're awake...it knows when you've been bad or good SO BE GOOD FOR GOODNESS' SAKE!"

216. I never had a problem with the cats
and Christmas tree. I al sways put bells on the bottom and they usually just sleep under the tree. Now I would never let the ferret near the tree. And the air puffs would probably become a game to them. Sound like a neat device though and betting after Christmas you can use it to keep them out of anything else you don't want them in. Or away from the front door. Couple of mine try to escape whenever we open the door.
