Rundown on hotel comparison
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 02:26 PM by SharonRB
Here's my quick rundown of the rates for the hotels in the article Bunny posted. I'll leave it to you to check out amenties, locations, etc. yourself. Sorry that I didn't check single rates for the first few.

Affinia Dumond
Studio Suite:
4 people $927 for three nights
3 people $852 for three nights
Junior suite:
4 people $1167 for three nights
3 people $972 for three nights

Doubletree
2 double beds, AARP rate - $279/night
(This was probably the least interesting option.)

Excelsior (near Central Park)
2 BR suite - 6 people $539/nite
5 people $519/nite
1 BR suite - 4 people - $299/$319/$309 per night
Singles were not available for our dates, but were $259/$279 per night when available.

Gershwin
2 twins + queen (3-4 people) - $249 for F&Sat/$229 for Sunday (Family suite)
2 doubles (3-4 people) - $189 for F&Sat/$169 for Sunday (Superior suite)
1 queen - $179/$179/$159
This was probably the most economical and seemed pretty cool.

QT
Not available for 3-4 per room
2 per room - $300/night

Stanford
Suite (sleeps 4) - $199/night for 2 doubles
King Deluxe room (sleeps 3) - $179/night for 1 king and sofa bed
Single rooms: Double bed - $139; Queen - $149
This was also very reasonable.

Hudson
Only 1-2 per room
$243 for double/$259 for queen

Off SoHo
This was actually the one that was not available for our dates.

Chelsea
Have to contact them for information. Not posted on their site.

The Time
Need two rooms for 4 adults.
Three adults:
Deluxe double - Average $257/night (2 full beds)
1BR Ssuite - Average $321/night (1 king + 1 full sofa bed)
1-2 people:
1 Queen - $192/night
1 King - $202/night

That should do it. I'm leaning toward the Gershwin or the Stanford, mostly based on price and availability, but need to look at the amenities and locations again.

On edit: I did go back and look at the article again and the amenities at the Gershwin sound less than great, but it still sounds pretty cool from the description (no thermostats in the rooms -- they have radiators only) and it's just a place to sleep, right? There was no full description of the Stanford in the article.

3. Stanford or Gershwin sound good because of the single rooms.
I want to spare all of you my snoring. I've never heard me snore myself but Mr. Bunny insists it happens. He snores louder though. I'm also afraid I drool on my pillow and we all know I'm prone to swallowing teeth in my sleep so..... Ok, I'll stop oversharing now.

How I wish I could go. Really, I do.
Who knows? Maybe things will look better in a month.

6. I'm used to Dave's snoring, so it wouldn't bother me
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 02:46 PM by SharonRB
If that's your only reason for wanting to room alone, don't let it stop you from joining us. I think I snore, too, according to Dave. Also, depending on the configuration of whatever we wind up with, some of the suites had the sleep sofa in a separate room and the Excelsior was a 2BR suite.

I can't speak for DG, but I'd be happy to have you room with us.

Also, the Excelsior does have availability for singles in the smaller suites -- the rates were $259-$279 for singles in those rooms.

8. i think i've snored myself awake
but since i live alone, i'm not sure. also i've lost a lot of weight since the last time i did that, so i probably don't do that anymore.

no one could possibly snore louder than my dad & if i could sleep through that racket, i can sleep through anything.

7. Just wanted to forewarn all of you.
I fully expect to be involved in the pajama party and just retire to my own bed when the festivities have called it a night. I'm not planning on missing anything, no matter where I end up sleeping. I can't do couches though, I'm afraid I'm 'the princess and the pea', a very light sleeper, need a bed to toss and turn in.

The Excelsior single room is definitely too expensive for me though so if we stay there I'd have to bunk up with people. Do any of these places have adjoining rooms. Last time I went to a hotel party with girlfriends, two of my friends shared a double room that adjoined my single, there was a door inbetween we could leave open or leave closed depending.

I'm not really being fussy, yust yoking with you. I'll do whatever is easiest and most economical for everyone, my only requirement is a real bed, not a couch.

9. No problem.
I think the Excelsior 2BR suite had beds in both bedrooms. There may have also been a foldout in the living room. I don't remember. I'm better off in a bed because of my back, but if it came down to it, I could do a foldout. It's not a deal breaker. So, do you want to plan to room with DG and me and maybe others, depending where we wind up?

10. My first picks are the Gershwin and the Hotel QT. I've heard a lot about
the Gershwin being a neat hotel and Hotel QT has a bar with a DJ ( I love to dance so that's always a plus for me, unless its a lousy DJ of course). Affinia Dumont sounds good too. Had you ruled out the QT for some reason? I'll have to check back over the posts. Is everyone staying over Sunday night too. I don't think I can so I hope that doesn't upset the balance of renting a suite or whatever. If it's a problem and everyone is staying over Sunday I might be able to swing it. What are the exact days and dates we are looking at. I'm a bit discombobulated because my kids have off all of Presidents week, so pretty sure that following Monday they have school and I'll be on full mom duty by then, have to get back Sunday night on the last bus (or my coach turns into a pumpkin.)

17. Lookie here Ladies: Hotwire offers as of 12/17....
I know it's a blind buy, but if you're as smart as us, it's not reallly...You see if you look at the details page and the ratings, #of reviews + last time reviewed you can tell exactly what hotel it is- in fact it's probably ones you are thinking of!!! AT 50-60% off, I have alway gotten awesome rooms from them...
So okay, I did everything for 3 nights, Fri Sat + Sun 2/17-20th and I did not try the Uptown Central Park Options because you can only pick 2 neighborhoods at once, and I picked Midtown and Soho, because further up is a pain in the butt, subway wise as well as not as fun and very expensive....

18. I don't know about anyone else, but
although the prices sound great this way, it makes me nervous for several reasons.

A. We have to wait until close to when we're going to book and it's a holiday weekend with heavy bookings.
B. With a large group and different needs (e.g., 4 to a room, singles, accessibility, etc.) I'm concerned we'd wind up in different hotels.

The whole blind booking thing doesn't really appeal to me even though we could save some bucks. I think we have several options with reasonable prices to choose from and we should do it soon. I think the latest discussion about the Affinia property (I forgot the name of it right now, but it's the one without Affinia in the name that we discussed earlier in the week) was looking good if we could get five people into the 2BR suite. Those wanting singles seemed to like the choice as well.

Bettyellen, I really appreciate your research and suggestions and it would be great if we only needed one room, but with all of the complexity, I think it's too hard.

If others disagree with me, I'll go along with whatever everyone wants to do, but that's my two cents.

it is, I know hotwire can't guarantee wheelchair accessability, so that's a no go.
Darn it, I just thought the prices were so good, and I have always been really pleased using them in the past.
Well, I see you all have it well under control and are getting ready to book, so I'll leave you to it.
And the infos there if anyone does need another option for any reason.

21. Hi, Betty!
Most modern hotels have handicapped rooms and I'll have to call ahead anyway. I'm gonna have to make my final decision after X-mas as the costs of my new septic system are continuing to escalate. It's $40.00 for the permit, $175.00 for the perc test, and $185.00 for pumping out the cesspit (owning a home is such a pleasure!), if all of this is included in the total cost it's okay but I have to find out if it is! Perhaps I'll get lucky and my father's friend will do all the excavation cheap!

Is your friend going to join us? Do you two want to share the suite with DG and me? Then we just need one more person to get our five and whoever that is can share our bathroom with us. Hopefully that 2BR suite will still be available when we decide to book.

22. Above all, we should all be in the same hotel.
I agree that the 'blind' booking decreases the chances of that happening. The Affinia without the name sounded great for bunking up. How many of us are there, I must admit with all I've got going on at home I haven't been paying close enough attention. Am I supposed to be doing something or is someone booking everything once we've decided? I won't be staying over Sunday night if that makes a difference . So for me it's just Friday and Saturday.

24. I totally agree we need to be in the same hotel
I've also lost track of how many of us there are. Do you want to bunk with DG and me if we get the 2BR suite? I know you can't take the sofa, so if need be I can take it. Maybe someone else can move in to take your place on Sunday, depending on who is or isn't staying over Sunday night.
