Countdown Newsletter -- 02/16/06: Cheney: Oh, By The Way...
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

We touched on this yesterday... Mr. Cheney's assertion that declassifying those government secrets is within his power...
Is this a pre-emptive strike against Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald?

Vice President Dick Cheney says he has the power to declassify government secrets, raising the possibility that he authorized his former chief of staff to pass along sensitive prewar data on Iraq to reporters "I have certainly advocated declassification. I have participated in declassification decisions," Cheney said. Asked for details, he said, "I don't want to get into that. There's an executive order that specifies who has classification authority, and obviously it focuses first and foremost on the president, but also includes the vice president." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11381222/

President Bush is satisfied with Vice President Dick Cheney's account of his Texas hunting accident, but Bush's spokesman declined to say Thursday whether the president felt it should have been revealed earlier. "I think that the vice president clearly explained the rationale behind that," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said, avoiding a direct response to questions about whether Bush felt the shooting accident was publicly disclosed in a timely manner. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11386566/
But of course, if the White House thinks the press' analysis of his interview is over, they're wrong.

Calling Hurricane Katrina "one of the most difficult and traumatic experiences of my life," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says he is fixing failures in his department before next storm season. "There are many lapses that occurred, and I've certainly spent a lot of time personally, probably since last fall, thinking about things that might have been done differently," Chertoff told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11385187/

Abramoff Bragged of Ties to Rove. The disgraced lobbyist helped get Bush to meet the leader of Malaysia, a former associate says. When the government of Malaysia sought to repair its tarnished image in the U.S. by arranging a meeting between President Bush and its controversial prime minister in 2002, it followed the same strategy as many other well-heeled interests in Washington: It called on lobbyist Jack Abramoff for help. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/la-na-abramoff15feb15,1,3386314.story (We didn't have time for this yesterday, we will today).

British man accused of killing his wife and infant daughter in their suburban Boston home is to be arraigned this afternoon in Framingham District Court. Neil Entwistle, 27, arrived at Framingham District Court around 12:15 p.m. in a Hopkinton police cruiser after spending the night in a holding cell at the Hopkinton Police Department. He was handcuffed and shackled at the legs and wearing a bullet-proof vest. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11384396/

A dog that won an award at the Westminster Kennel Club show this week escaped from its cage at John F. Kennedy International Airport, setting off a search. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-missing-dog,1,484540.story?coll=sns-ap-sports-headlines

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
TOKYO -- Eight people in southern Japan forked over 150 million yen ($1.27 million) to a man who promised huge returns involving fake American $1 million bills and then disappeared with their money, a news report said Thursday. The United States Treasury does not make $1 million bills. The unidentified investors first heard of the $1 million note from a 52-year-old construction material company president in early 2003, according to Asahi, citing several investors. The president told them about a "rare" $1 million bill that was for sale in Chengdu, China, and invited them to pool money to buy several such notes promising a return 10 times of their investment, the report said. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/MILLION_DOLLAR_BILL?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
Sorry, but how easy would it have been to see of a million dollar bill even exists. Google! Hello!
