Burned bridges can be repaired. Consciences, once lost, can't be retrieved so easily.
We're all grateful to people who give us a chance when nobody else would. But some very, very slimy people can "give us chances"...and then, when we show our gratitude and we are beholden to them, demand our souls in return.
You say here: "If I go, I get no say (not that I have any now)." How does it make sense, then, to stay? You have no say if you go. You have no say if you stay. So, what you're admitting is, you won't lose your "say" if you go, because you have none to lose.
What you're admitting here is that you're inexperienced, and you're trying to get a break...and as a result, you're willing to sell your soul for a byline and some clips.
How cheaply some souls come.
And you're rationalizing every which way come Sunday. "All I can do is say to be fair, and let the readers decide for themselves the credibility." But this isn't FAIR, Muff. It's taking something unsubstantiated and blowing it into something of substance and saying "Let the readers decide whether what we say is crap or true. It's not our responsibility to determine that." Nice.
I don't know what I have to do to get you to see that. Can I appeal to your Dem sensibilities? Do you remember when Matt Drudge was claiming that a woman who used to work with John Kerry was his mistress? It was a heap of crap with nothing to support it--but it was a deliberate smear campaign designed to hurt him.
"Let the readers decide" is not a valid excuse for printing gossip, rumor and innuendo. It is irresponsible, shoddy journalism, and if I were in your place, Jossip is the LAST thing I'd want to display on my resume.
It's like Keith said:
You can’t in this world today I think behave morally correctly at all times....But on occasion you need to stand up and say, I’m not going to feel right about this if I do it, and I’m not going to feel right about it for the rest of my life. And it’s violating my principles and I want to say something and I want to do something now. And it’s going to put me at personal risk.
...What are you doing that is contributing to the thing that you don’t like in the world, and then do what you can to correct it. Not quit your job today...but what...Can you try to change the job slightly? Can you move on to another job in a year’s time? Can you do something to correct what you perceive as a moral error? You are exerting moral force.
And:
...moral force and money often do not mix in the slightest. They are often separate beams of light traveling through the universe, and you may have to jump off one to ride the other for a while.
Because of how hard things are for you right now, Muff, I understand that you may not feel you can afford to ride the beam of moral force right now. But I hope you don't spend so much time riding the beam of money that you forget all about that other beam of light--and lose your soul as a result.
