Beaver football player arrested with stolen sheep

KATU Web Staff

CORVALLIS, Ore. - For at least the eighth time since September 2004, an Oregon State University football player has been arrested.

OSU junior defensive tackle Ben Seigert has been arrested, for among other things, stealing a Ram from the university sheep center early Friday morning.

The latest arrest is among the strangest Benton County deputies have faced.

"(The deputy) saw something pop up in the back of the pickup when he was pulling the vehicle over, and after he approached the vehicle (the Ram) popped up again, sort of startling him," says Benton County Undersheriff Diana Simpson. "I don’t recall too many incidents of animals taken from OSU."

Seigert might have gotten away with the prank if he hadn't been caught driving the getaway car more than 60 miles an hour in a 25 mile an hour zone.

Seigert was also charged with driving under the influence after failing a sobriety test that registered .14.

Deputies say Seigert admitted to stealing the Ram shortly after explaining that he found it along the road.

The player has not been charged with the theft of the Ram, however deputies say the county DA could bring Seigert before a grand jury on first degree theft charges.

Head football coach Mike Riley has not responded to the most recent arrest of one of his football players.

Two other individuals were in the pickup with the OSU lineman at the time of the arrest.

Deputies believe the Ram, which was part of an OSU study on homosexuality, was not harmed.

1. The ram
was "part of an OSU study on homosexuality"?

That's the weirdest part of the story BY FAR!

2. I don't get why they keep capitalizing "ram." Makes it look like...

... he kidnapped another football player!

Also I was thinking (hope this doesn't get locked) that instead of studying gay-ness, maybe they should be looking into, er, some *other* practices?

4. I'm wondering just what the study was about
and imagining some repug congresscritter getting all het up that we're spending tax dollars doing research on gay sheep. 'Course, right about the time he steps up to the microphone to shoot his mouth off, he's going to get pulled to one side by an aide, who'll whisper into his ear, "the man that was arrested was your son, sir"... :7

6. But from being a fun loving college guy once myself ......
..... the important line is:

Seigert was also charged with driving under the influence after failing a sobriety test that registered .14.

You have to have a something in you to think that going out and grabbing farm
animals is a good time. Because who among us has not spent the afternoon
and evening in a bar and has not thought, "Farm animals ...... why not."

I, tell you what. If I was on the O. Line across from him in a game I would BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! for all I am worth.

Just me and ewe tonight ....... I put in some fresh clover & grass. Please
don't be sheepish ..... stop over.

7. Update: the offender has been re-arrested for vagrancy, after
sheriff's deputies found him laying on a downtown sidewalk, guzzling Woolite.

So sad.
