UK Jews slam cemetery desecration
Back-to-back incidents of vandalism at Jewish cemeteries in England elicited a strong outcry from the Jewish community as well as significant attention from the British press this week.

The desecrations in England followed a significant case of vandalism at Budapest's Jewish Cemetery, where over 130 graves were severely damaged.

The grave desecrations in London and Manchester were denounced by the Board of Deputies of British Jews as "deplorable acts by mindless cowards" and splashed across the front page of The Independent under the headline "The shocking face of anti-Semitism."

In both cases, nearly 100 graves were broken, toppled or daubed with anti-Jewish slogans. The headstones of two children, well over a century old, were among those destroyed in London's West Ham neighborhood, where vandals also ripped off the iron gate of the Rothschild family mausoleum.

1. Are you sure?
I mean...it was against Jews...probably because of the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank...sounds like I/P to me. :sarcasm:

Sadly, if you had posted this in any of the main rooms it would have "sunk like a lead balloon," or "resembled an I/P thread and been banished to the I/P forum," but since it is linked to an article, it wouldn't be locked straight-away.

Why do articles like this not make a big 'splash?' Could it be further proof that anti-Semitism is in fact real? I am not sure. All I know is this is no different than what I grew up with, but now I am told it was "all in my mind."

The only "plus" to this...no living Jews were physically harmed.

2. As you'll recall - we DID post an article like this in the LBN
concerning the FIRST incident - you and I were the only ones who commented.

On the other hand, a post about Dr. Dean condemning antisemitic language resulted in scads of posts, some quite nasty, and wound up in I/P anyway. Ditto a thread about anti-Zionism/anti-Semitism.

So, I am forced to conclude that articles speaking out AGAINST antisemitism, or suggesting that anti-Israel = antisemitic, attract a LOT of attention, much of it negative, whereas articles actually confirming the existence of antisemitism are ignored.

Go figure.

The article about the second attack on Jewish graves was posted in I/P because it seemed logical, as Muslims have been implicated in most such attacks in Europe - some of which have been violent. This is verified by police reports. It is hard to see how such attacks on Jews AREN'T related to I/P. This article provided a follow up to other articles about antisemitism in Britain - which met with much denial that such a thing even exists, and that people writing about this topic must be right-wingers - even though pictures of Jewish guys portrayed as flying pigs have been published in newspapers and crime reports indicate antisemitic attacks have been soaring, racism was a factor in the Galloway/Oona King election in East Bethnal, and so forth.

In any case, since these back to back attacks made it pretty hard to deny that antisemitism DOESN'T exist in Britain, this second thread resulted in many posts protesting that articles about attacks on Jews or Jewish institutions shouldn't be posted in I/P because they don't have anything to do with Israel.

Huh?

3. So true
Rather than commenting on the actual article, the debate became about how it shouldn't be in I/P. It does, in my mind, say a lot. No comments when posted in LBN and when in I/P, met with irrelevant remarks or off topic discussions about the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment. "All {people} are equal, but some are more equal than others."

4. I think what ISN'T said, speaks volumes. And add this to
the insulting comments appended to the article about that book investigation in Russia. I'd say we have big trouble. One expects this from, say, the KKK.

Just wish I had some clue, any clue, what to do about it?
