My sister
Hello.

My sister (eight years older than me) went into the hospital last week. She's not been well for some time. About four years ago, her 11-year-old granddaughter died of cancer. That event pretty much broke my sister. Roughly a year later she went into the hospital and wasn't expected to come out vertical, let alone whole. She had pretty much destroyed her lungs through smoking. (I mention that only as a fact; it is not a value judgment.) Somehow she pulled through, but continued with her behavior (again, not a criticism). This time, she ain't going to make it. My nephew, on-site, told me about an hour ago that the doctor recommended stopping all the life-saving measures they'd been using, and firing her up with sufficient morphine so that she'll no longer be in pain—then wait for the inevitable. It seems unlikely she'll last another 36 hours, if that.

I'm awfully tired, folks. My wife, partner, best friend and lover died in her sleep, next to me, about two and a half years ago. I've not had a full-time job since getting laid off in 2006. Etc., etc.

I realize full well there are countless people worse off than me, and that I shouldn't whinge. Sorry, but that is little, cold comfort. I'm just perishingly weary of the endless beat-downs. One can only take so much.

Best of luck to everyone here.

3. So sorry for all the pain you've had to endure
over the past few years. It's okay for you to whinge, my dear, perfectly normal and respectable to do during the crux of yet another crisis. Know that we are with you in spirit and hope for the best possible outcome of it all. And, do take good care of yourself during this difficult time because you are going to live through it whether you think you can or not. Tight hugs.

6. Thank you ....
... to everyone and all the kind thoughts. They are much appreciated.

I don't have much to say, really. I'm just waiting for the phone call, and to find out if my nephew/brother in law can front me a ticket to Portland.

Thanks again.
