The Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority will hold a Public Meeting on Thursday, October 13, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Disasters Edge Environmental Education Center, 138 Park Road, St. Michael, to obtain public input as part of the completion of a Feasibility Study for the Path of the Flood Trail Links. This project, funded by the PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, is to determine the feasibility of a link between the two existing sections of the Path of the Flood Trail and also a link from this trail in South Fork to the National Flood Memorial in St. Michael.

In my posting in 2008, I mentioned three options. I called them the Lower Trail, the Middle trail and the Upper Trail.

In the most recent proposal, three options are given. The First and Second Options are variation of my previous comments on what I had called the "Lower Trail". What Kimball (The Engineering firm that did the study) calls A1R (OR Red) or A1B (Or Blue) differ in onlyqbout 10-20 feet. Red, goes down the path of the Winder Water main. then stays on the Water main till it gets to the Staple Bend Tunnel. Blue follows the same Water Main, but instead of going on the main, goes on the access road that runs between the Water main and the Lejigh Railroad branch line. Red would have to be bulldozed to be acceptablem while the Blue, except for the part between the present trail (Which follows the same water main) and where the water main runs parallel to the Lehigh Railroad. The company reclaiming te old slag dumped into the area by Bethlehem steel company. already has an flat route to take

What the Engineers are recommending is what I called the "Upper trail". This trail climbs further up the mountain and then down to be at the bottom of Incline #1 of the old Portage Railway. This would close the gap. Furthermore, given the natural of the Slag Recovery, the recover will transfer the property to the National Park Service as they not longer needed. Thus the Red trail may become available but that be 40 years in the Future.

What I called the Middle Trail is out, to much expense to eliminate 200-300 feet of collapses hillside. The whole hill will have to be stabilized for the whole hillside in that area is unstable. Never even made the final cut.

Thus that leaves what the Engineers call A1Y (or Yellow Trail), This goes via some old Logging roads which goes around the Collapsed part of the hill. Extensive Knotweed infestation. Worse the plan is to make minimal trail, no road building, just enough work, to permit people to walk their bikes aroiund the collasped trail and connect the two sections of trail.

This section of the Path of the Flood, Trail A, at the Franklin Ballfield will be closed on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, possibly for the remainder of the week to enable the Cambria/Somerset Authority to do excavation for a connection.

We apologize for any inconvenience but invite everyone to try one of our other trails, Path of the Flood from Mineral Point to Ehrenfeld, the James Mayer Riverswalk in Moxham, or the Ghost Town Trail with acess areas in Ebensburg, Nanty Glo, Twin Rocks and Vintondale!

Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority The loop is designed and the corridor is railbanked so all we need is money. We have been working to get segments of this trail completed but haven't gotten the funds to do it yet but we continue to press to get it completed.

1. On Friday December 9, 2011 I walked on the path and some work is being done
I do not know what, may be tied in with the water line underneath the path, or the underground cable in the area instead of the Path itself, but someone ran a bulldozer on the unfinished part of the path. I did not go down the unfinished part to see what was being done, but something is being done.
