Well, I am going to have a hysterectomy.
Not seeking medical advice, just seeking support from you fine women of DU.

I am scared and kind of depressed about it, but I do know it is the right course of action.

1. Have you heard of Hyster Sisters?

I found them when I thought I might be having one. I could still have one eventually if I can get rid of the tumors in my lungs. My doctor says she'd like to do it. But right now, there's no point.

Anyway, the site seemed like it would be very helpful and they have a message board. Good luck! :hi:

seven years ago now. I kept my right ovary because it was unaffected by the tumors so I wouldn't have to use HRT. I love it and have never had a second thought about it. It really is the relief of a huge burden once you're a woman of a certain age.

6. Got it scheduled.
November 3rd.

The plan is for a Laparoscopic Supracervical (leaves the cervix intact) Hysterectomy. It depends upon the scar tissue present. I may have to have an Abdominal Supracervical Hysterectomy.

I am keeping my ovaries.

16. I just found this.
I had everything taken out in Feb. 2007, due to uterine cancer. I needed no other treatment. Hystersisters.org was a fantastic website for me, and I think you will find it very useful. Good luck!:hi:

I take care of lots of hyst patients and people do fabulous after this type of surgery. If you've had prior abdominal surgery, you probably already have heard that if there's too much scar tissue, they may have to convert to an open total abdominal hyst. Even so, you should only be in the hospital for a max of 3 days. Go slow, use your incentive spirometer, and do be afraid to take pain meds!

12. Had a complete one almost two years ago.
THere was a bit of cancer, so it had to be complete. (It's ok; cancer all gone.) Anyhoo, I was terrified ahead of time, partly because I'd never had surgery before. But now I'm glad I had it. With no worries about birth control any more, hence no need for condoms in a monogamous relationship, I'm finding the sex much, much better. And of course the lack of periods is terrific.

14. As if I needed a reminder of why I am having the hysterectomy
Today I got my Last Menstrual Period. :eyes:

I am having the severe bleeding and heavy cramping, only I can't take what I normally do for the cramps because I have to avoid NSAIDs before the surgery to cut down on risk of excessive bleeding.

x(

Oh well.

I had a TAH a year ago and I'm kicking myself that I didn't have it sooner. I recovered quickly and I'm feeling 1000 times better than I did before the surgery.

I second the use of the hystersisters' web site. It was a lifesaver for me.

Hopefully, your recovery is going smoothly.

19. Just saw this today - 4 days post op for me
I know it's going to get very frustrating, healing for so long, but except for lots of GI problems, I'm finding it far easier than I thought it would be. Stopped pain medication on day 2. I'm just tired... and hurting GI-wise.

It all went very fast, from problem to decision to surgery w/in 6 weeks. I'm just waiting for it all to catch up with me, emotionally.

I hope now so many months out that you're feeling well and happy with your decision!

21. Talk about time capsule- I just saw your post today!
I'm fine, really. The only problems afterward were neck pain (probably the way they moved me while I was under) and some intestinal distress from the antibiotics (I can't tolerate them well at all!).

I'm still more tired than normal now, two months out. Some days, it's really tired, some hardly noticeable.

But all in all, I was surprised by how little pain I had to deal with, and how easily it all went!

Now if I could only get my rings on without fear of never getting them off, lol. I guess there are all sorts of little things like that to come with menopause!

22. Fortunately for me, I don't have a problem with my ring-size
post-menopause. I do have this mood thing to deal with. I am learning to manage myself again, though. All in all, I like not accomodating the monthly guest.
