Has anyone here had the Novasure procedure done?
I have some questions. Specifically, were you under local or general anesthetic? Doc's office or hospital? How satisfied are you with the results?

Thank you!

1. Yes and I'm alive today because of it!
Q1. I was under a general.

Q2. In a hospital because I have other chronic problems, although normally it's an outpatient (anemia, diabetes, and then some).

I had been bleeding heavily for nearly a MONTH when it was finally done and had undergone THREE transfusions.

It's been such a blessing--I'm past any desire for children (I have a wonderful son) and am happily married, I don't anticipate ever wanting another child or partner).

I was just a tired, sick, cranky person with little desire for much of anything--literally. It's wonderful to be my old self again.

I haven't bled at all since some spotting during recovery. One thing I do notice is that my breasts are continually swollen and a bit tender, but the discomfort is minimal.

Now I can't exactly say it was the Novasure that did this, but after about 5 months, my sex drive has shifted into overdrive--I'm in my 40s but a bit of a late bloomer in that regard (hubby is younger, fwiw).

One BIG thing--if your partner(s) is/are male, it is essential to use reliable birth control as you can still get pregnant but it results in an ectopic pregnancy.

I have no problem discussing it in this forum, or feel free to PM me if I can be of any more help.

For me, it gave me my life back, but it's not to be undertaken lightly.

2. I am considering this as well
I am perimenopausal anyway, have had a tubal ligation, so we be wanting no more chillens anyways!

I am so sick of losing 4 days every three weeks to hemorrhaging.

3. Thanks for the reply.
When I first posted, I was really frustrated because what my doctor was telling me was not matching up with the claims on the Novasure website.

My problems are not quite as serious as yours, thank goodness (glad you are doing so well now!), but it's just gotten really annoying. My cycle was getting to be 21-24 days and the first 2-3 days were so heavy I didn't want to do anything other than stay home, although I would have to struggle through if it was a workday. The website makes it sound like you can just pop in to your doctor's office and have it done in a matter of minutes.

My doctor does the procedure, but he does it at a hospital under general. And the hospital where he works is not that close to me, since I moved a few years ago. I kept going to him after I moved because I do feel comfortable with him and ordinarily you only go see the gyno once a year. Well, I tried calling some of the medical clinics close to me that I found on the Novasure website. All I wanted to know was if they usually performed the procedure under local or general anesthetic. They, of course, would not answer such a question unless I were one of their patients.

Since then, I have seen my doctor again and I asked him what my chances were of finding a doctor closer to me who did this under local. That's when he told me that since I have never had any kids, probably any doctor I went to would want to put me completely under. Something about the size of the cervix affects how difficult the procedure is.

For now, I am trying low dose estrogen BC pills. I don't think this will be a long term solution for me since my blood pressure was already borderline and these pills seem to be nudging it even higher. My mom finally ended her problems like this with a hysterectomy at age 50. I'm only 42 and I do not want to take hormones for another decade. My decision now is whether to go for the Novasure and D&C and maybe have to do it again in a couple years, or start thinking about a more permanent solution.

Aarrrgh! Why is it so difficult? I think about women in Victorian times who traveled all over the world, or pioneer women who spent their entire lives out in the middle of nowhere. How? How? HOW did they do it?

4. I had never heard of this procedure- but I'm going to ask my Dr about it
I'm about to turn 47, don't want any kids and am on BC to regulate my long and somewhat heavy periods (more so than for birth control).

Thanks for alerting me to this procedure. I'm about to call to make my appt. for my annual and I plan to ask my Dr. about this. :hi:

6. I am on the waiting list to get it done
My cycle is so screwy. My last period lasted 16 days, all but two days of which I was borderline hemorrhaging. Oh joy.

7. a friend had this procedure
but it wasn't successful. this was about 9 months ago. she had fibroids which made EXTREMELY heavy periods.

she's almost to menopause and really hesitating whether to go ahead with a hysterectomy or just let nature take its course...

8. I am finally having it done this coming Tuesday
It took one trip to the Urgent care and one trip to the ER to get them to move me up on the waiting list for surgery.

Here is hoping it helps.

9. Had it done last Tuesday
Also had a D&C done at the same time (since they were unable to give me the depo-Lupron shot in time). I have had some cramping, and am still fatigued from the anesthesia, but so far so good.

10. I would LOVE to share!
OMG... I JUST had this procedure done last week on the 13th. I wish I had been more like you and done some more investigating prior instead of "trusting" what my doctor was telling me.

OK, I don't have any health problems (none serious anyway) and my OB said I was a perfect candidate for the Novasure procedure. I scheduled it within 3 weeks of my ultrasound and was told by my OB that she would do it in the office. I was to come in 1 week prior to pick up my prescriptions for the procedure. She wrote me a script for Demerol, Phenergen, Toradol, 1 Valium, a cervix dilating drug, and 40 count 800mg Ibuprofen. She explained to me that I was to insert the cervix dilating drug the night before and 1 Ibuprofen. I got there an hour early the day of the procedure and after a quick PG test, they gave me the 1 Valium. Shortly after, they gave me a shot of Demerol and a shot of Toradol. I had never had Demerol before - it barely affected me. I was just a little sleepy. I went into the room and they began.

She started by numbing my cervix with something (I'm assuming the left over Toradol as there were 4 vials of it in my script bottle). Then it took about 10 minutes to "prep". During this 10 minutes I was experiencing a pinching sensation (painful) and really bad cramps. I felt like I was in labor (at the stage where I would be screaming for my epidural!). FWI, I've had 3 kiddos and I'm 32. When she turned on the machine which radiates the energy to remove the tissue in the uterus it felt like my insides were on fire. It was HOT really HOT. Thankfully, that part only lasted about 1 minute.

I was sent home with some pain meds and an antibiotic. I cramped nonstop for the next 12 hours and have still been cramping off and on since. I went back to work after 3 1/2 days (I took FRiday off - had the procedure done on Thursday afternoon) and I've been miserable. All I was told prior was that I would experience some minor cramping during and right after but could go back to work Monday morning and I would be fine! The discharge after is gross and the odor is horrific.

Please don't get me wrong, I am still very happy that I had this done because a couple of weeks with discomfort is totally worth it as opposed to another 10 or 15 years of the horribly painful periods I had been experiencing. I only wish I had done it in a hospital setting where they would have had access to more pain medicine. Once my meds were gone, that was it.

I hope I haven't deterred you from having it done because I truly believe it's wonderful and if I hadn't have done the Novasure, I would have had a hysterectomy which would have been much more invasive. But you may want to rethink having it done in an office, a long trip to a hospital is worth it, trust me.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions! : )
