I'm getting really uncomfortable...
with all the talk about the "B" woman. How are you all feeling? Whether this is or isn't a hoax, it's getting ugly out there. Can I hide in here?

1. It's not only ugly, it's patently ridiculous
I'm staying out of it.

My favorite (not) comment so far was something to the effect of "The police don't interrogate someone for 5 hours when they think they're telling the truth" All I could think of the thousands and thousands of rape victims interrogated like criminals.

There is a post asking people to stop blaming gender, which I appreciated.

One or two of DU's serial misogynists are in the mix, the same ones who turn up in many threads regarding sexism and gender. Some of these are making the problem worse. Part of what happens is an sort of "ism" war, sexism vs. racism--they don't call it that of course. It's very sick behavior, and unfortunately a common reaction from certain posters with issues. (I'm assuming issues, strange folk for sure)

The story has been recanted by the girl herself evidently, so maybe we can get past this.

3. I'm always torn
when I see these threads, about whether I should respond, but ultimately decide I just don't want to kick the thread. I do try to alert though, and respond to the threads I see about sexism.

Now that she's recanted, one of the things that saddens me the most is that the myth of women claiming false rape will be perpetuated.

Thanks for your response, and though I haven't posted much in here, I appreciate this safe space.

2. The sad thing is that now that she has confessed that it was a hoax...
it's even worse here.

4. Do I even want to know what happened...?
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 09:31 PM by bliss_eternal
I was away from the internet all day, this is the first thing I've read here (as I tend to stay out of the main forums). I have no idea what is going on...I can only guess some poor woman said she was raped, DU went nuts (like it always does when someone says they are raped)...and now she's recanted...and the usual suspects feel justified in their earlier misogyny--kind of like Duke?

Am I in the ball park here?

Whether I'm right or not, I'm still staying out of it. Sounds :scared:

5. In a way, worse.
A young woman claimed she was attacked at an ATM, held down by a black man, and a back-wards "B" carved into her face because she was a McCain supporter. There were obvious inconstancies with the story from the beginning, to say the least. She also made an accusation of sexual assault. She has since recanted. The gender of the young woman became at issue in certain threads. (of course)

On DU, you're right-- you'd think it was the Duke case redux. The sexism of the typical DU response was completely trumped by the racist nature of her accusation--a division I always, always, hate and despise. And still quite frankly, have a difficult time believing any progressive worthy of the name actually promotes. But they have and do and will in the future. Sexism is not less toxic than racism, however with our first black president on the horizon the misogynists think they have a pass. Like they need one, huh? Any challenge to male sexual entitlement sends them ape shit.

...and wonder if any of the people that post here, actually read any of the things they write?

Of course, most don't understand the implications behind much of what they write here, which is part of the problem.

I recall a great many posts before a black man was the Democratic nominee, that read as blatantly racist. The Duke rape trial threads were extra special in that they delivered racism and sexism all in one.....yay! Weren't we lucky?

7. What I'm uncomfortable with is why people keep bringing up her size and level of attractiveness
why on earth would that be an issue?

I didn't believe it was a real attack, but I wouldn't believe it if she were a supermodel either. Her level of desirability is not relevant.
