It's nothing new, in fact it's a very ancient need/desire. It's the sexual dichotomies that fuck us up.
When you're deep into feminism, there's a few very unpalatable ideas-- "truths" to me-- about the distribution of power, sexual power, procreative power, economic power, spiritual power etc. What real time power is, and who has it and why. One of the reason I personally can't stand evolutionary psychology are the attempts to make maladaptive destructive behavior somehow adaptive at some point in human history.
Ya end up revisiting and wondering about silly things like did women start wearing long skirts because of the idea of chastity which led to not being able to move or run from danger, leading to an even greater dependence on male protection, or because they made it ever so much easier to pee, among other things. You wonder how much of PMS is pure biology and how much out of the near archetypal fear of, and hatred for bleeding women. You wonder why women still fake orgasms. You wonder if the whole concept of sacred "virginity" wasn't a woman's idea, seeing how you avoid the terror of childbirth and disease and can still experience great sexual pleasure. I mean ya gotta wonder.
Then again, you also wonder why people still say stupid shit like prostitution is the oldest profession. Jesus.
