All I could think of after reading this is, I wonder how often this happens--men with this pathology deciding to become police officers (probably because it gives them better access to their victims)? It's so horrifying.

1. A statistic we'll probably never know
Since many women don't report sexual assault anyway, if it's committed by a police officer she'd probably assume she won't be believed- even more so than a non officer perpetrator.
I thought the comment in the thread you link to about most people who want the job shouldn't get it was interesting.

2. "(S)he'd probably assume she won't be believed..."
While I agree that women raped by assailants who work in law enforcement probably think they can't press charges because they won't be believed by other members of law enforcement, I think their reticence is largely about (valid) fear for their lives. Any woman who is raped has good reason to believe the rapist poses a threat to her life, but now more than ever, (post 9/11 and Bush/neo-con reinvention of our security state) police officers have virtually untouchable power, and only infrequently face any form of consequences for abusing that power.

3. I think you're right.
The famous "Blue Wall" will kill you. I think that's a very reasonable fear.

It seems that every few weeks we have another story of law enforcement committing vile abuses of civil rights and getting away with it because they're law enforcement. There doesn't see to be any abuse that will really cause a scandal.

Even here in NYC where we've had some of the worst scandals, it always gets pinned on one or two "bad apples" and the department as a whole gets a free pass.

4. it's about power
using the fear of being arrested and thrown in jail for disobeying a police officer as leverage to rape is the height of abuse of power.

Look at the cop in Chicago who beat that female bartender mercilessly while other male partrons looked on and did nothing---they were afraid of him retaliating on them, so they just let him beat her... even when she got up, she still stood up to him and he ran with his tail between his legs to a rehab clinic and sent his henchmen over to intimidate the owner and the victim.

There was the cop in Orange County, CA who just beat a rap with the help of a jury with regards to sexually harassing a stripper... because she was a stripper, it was impossible for him to have sexually harassed her because she works in the sex industry.

I think it happens far more than is reported because of the threat of incarceration.
