49ers QB Alex Smith placed on IR, likely ending his tenure with team

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, 9-10-08

Alex Smith was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, putting him out for the season and essentially ending his frustrating career with the 49ers a little more than three years after they made him the first overall pick in the NFL draft.

Smith, who was inactive for Sunday's game, said afterward that an MRI showed a fracture in the shoulder but he didn't think the injury would end his career. He didn't know at that time whether further surgery would be required.
