Interesting book for re-using old t-shirts
http://www.amazon.com/Generation-108-Ways-Transform-T-Shirt/dp/0761137858/sr=1-1/qid=1170259056/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-7649628-3880427?ie=UTF8&s=books

my daughter got this for Christmas, and about 30 of my old concert t-shirts. she now has a new "cool" wardrobe.

1. That's a great idea
I've read some thrift shop boards where people redesign clothes they find and sell them. It's a real trend and one that's very exciting. It's so cool that young people are interested in sewing.

2. she surprized us by asking for a sewing machine for her 13th b-day
so we ran with it, and got her lots of fabric and books about it for chrismas.

3. Fabulous!
There's a great online fabric store that's wildly popular. It's www.fabric.com. Easy enough. I shop with them often. They have an email newsletter with extra sale offers like free shipping and coupon discounts to be applied to already sale priced fabrics and notions. I mention them with confidence since they have excellent customer service, good variety and quality products.

It must feel so good to have a 13 year old who is eager to sew. It's a delight to hear about her!

5. can you post a photo?
I can't imagine a gym bag made out of t-shirts so I'd love to see it, sounds really neat and appeals to my thrifty self (must check out this book you've mentioned)

6. no photo, but I can describe it.
It used 2 t-shirts, both were black concert shirts with logos / writing on front and back.

The fronts were cut into large square panels, and make the sides of the bag. They were sewn together at the bottom. The backs were cut into smaller rounded panels, and make the ends of the bag. The finished product looks like a fat cylinder.

Then, long strips of leftover fabric were sewn to make handles, which go along the outside of the sides and underneath, to give support.

She also added a lining of dark blue fabric (I guess she just had it leftover) and a velcro flap to close the top. Very neat!

7. great description! I can easily picture it!
... for the past 14 years I have had a couple of kind of unique t-shirts I got in Jamaica that are now too small for me but I figured "someday" I would "do something" with the graphics--really the only thing I had thought of was cutting them out and stretching them over some foamcore -- you have given me some new ways to think about what to do with them.

8. She's also made a book bag for herself
which used only two front panels sewn together to make a square with an open top, with the same kind of straps,

and a pillow case out of an old tie-died looking Santana shirt.

the possibilities are endless!
