ROCKLAND — In the back of the Rockland Solid Waste Facility, three long piles of soil and yard waste are in the process of becoming the Midcoast's first municipal composting program.

The four components of the Rockland Solid Waste Facility are the landfill, the recycling center, the transfer station and the universal waste disposal area — where electronic waste such as rechargeable batteries, televisions and computer monitors are held prior to being picked up by UNI Waste, a company that provides transportation and disposal services for various types of special wastes.

"Now there'll be a fifth component, which is composting," said facility Director David St. Laurent.

St. Laurent said he hopes to double and eventually triple the size of the composting facility.

If your local dump doesn't do this, it would be a great suggestion :hi:
