1. "Islam" was excellent (IMHO).
I can recommend it for the interested non-muslim.

A bit of reading in history is helpful too, in dispelling the fog of xenophobia.

6. I thought so too...
It was one of the set texts for a unit I had to do last year, and usually anything with the slightest hint of religion sends me to sleep, but Karen Armstrong didn't. There's more than a few DUers I wish would read this book to dispel some of their strange ideas about Islam...

Violet...

3. I read "History of God." The section on Islam was pretty detailed.
Not light reading. Very informative.

4. An Interview with the Author...
Salaam alaykum! Thank you for the information and links. I am going to have to look at my budget and see about picking up at least one of her books, maybe once a month. :)

Thought those of you who are interested might want to take a look at an Interview by Religion and Ethics Newsweekly with Karen.

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/week602/armstrong.html

Just a brief quote from the Interview that Karen made in response to improving interfaith relations:

"...It's very important that people see what Islam is, and what it is not, and É see these acts of violence, especially the September 11 acts of violence, as totally unrepresentative of the Islamic tradition, and so the more education that goes on, the better -- education on all sides.

Muslims, too, have got to change some of their textbooks to give their children a better, more balanced view of Jews and Christians. Christians have got to change their textbooks..."

Peace!!
:hi:

5. I would also like to recommend her book, _Holy War_

For comparison's sake, it's a rather longer and deeper book than her Islam which I read, enjoyed, and learned from.

corrected title on edit
