May have a chance to work for Homeland Security
Under a contracting firm. What do you think? Looks like I will get an interview next week. If I get the offer, should I take it? They could probably use some ethical people over there. I've a friend who has been with them all this time and she recommended me, and she knows my political proclivities.

1. Could you share a little more?
Do I understand correctly that you will not be directly in the department but employed by the private sector? Also, do you know much about the history and prospects of the particular company?

I've met exactly ONE person who works for Homeland Security, so it's not as though I'm an expert. But my gut reaction is that getting a government contract is promising (I work for a private firm that receives a lot of business from the federal government). As for the long-term prospects and structure of the DHS, I just don't know yet.

2. Yeah it's a rather small company that subcontracts
a friend has been associated with them for a long time. I used to know the founders, but they left (not always a good sign). Also I know they throw wonderful summer picnics with steamed crabs as my friend takes me to the company picnic every year.

Currently I'm unemployed, so it's not like I can be really picky about my prospects, but I still think it's a good move.

3. I wish you well, and I hope...
...that you will conduct some online research on the company and perhaps talk to a few more people. I am hesitant to comment on the long-term prospects of a company unless there's something to go by, and even then there's nothing guaranteed.

Perhaps your mind would be put at rest if you sat down with your friend and talked, or had a discussion with some other staff.

Best wishes!

4. I may get an offer tomorrow from e-commerce firm
in Fredericksburg, Va. They don't pay as much but have stock options and perhaps I can move further south this summer and get a bigger place if I get that job.
