what are the qualifications needed or what is done on a day to day basis on the job...

Some jobs inside the HIM areas of hospitals: 1)Director of Medical Records - responsible for all services provided though the department including HR staffing and retention; vendor contracts and budgets, office equipment, software choices; security issues; record retention to maintain compliance with Joint Commission policies for hospital accreditation and Federal, State laws and local regulations. May supervise Asst/Deputy Directors, Supervisors, Team Leaders, and staff technicians supporting the maintainence of the Master Patient Index; Coding for reimbursement including assignment of diagnoses, procedures, and DRG codes; Analysis/Re-analysis of the record (checking the charts for necessary signatures/documents), Release of Information Clerk (responding and tracking requests for patient information for any number of purposes); Privacy Officer - education and HIPAA policy compliance. File clerk - locates and pulls charts as required, files overflow loose sheets, and purges files for archiving and record retention. Transcription services of physician dictation are often supervised through this department. Supervises the maintenance of research services; education services, registries.

2. Thanks! That is very helpful & just what I was looking for
In my local paper today alone there are 7-8 ads for medical billers & coders & after looking into local Adult Education classes, I needed to know if any cert. or training is more hghly regarded than another.
