6. all diesel engines can
100% biodiesel can be used in a new engine.

used engines have to be refitted and cleaned first, because the biodiesel acts like a cleaner and will loosen all the crud that the diesel has left behind, but you can use 10%-20% bio in a used engine, without having to mess with the engine.

7. Cool! My alma mater, UGA, is going to use commercial bio-diesel
in its fleet of campus buses! There is a local supplier who thinks that they can get enough fuel for the bus fleet. The supply and the cost will determine if they continue to use the biodielsel after the test period.

8. What would you call a "New" diesel engine?
We have a '96 Ford Powerstroke. But it doesn't nearly have enough miles on it to call it broken in. There are a few biodiesel stations in our area that sell a mixture fuel. What would you suggest about our engine? Or where could I look to find out? I've read a number of web pages on the subject but no advice on what to do before we make a switch in fuel.

Thx!

9. New means new - never run on diesel
Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 01:01 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
the diesel leaves deposits on the interior of the engine, the tank and hoses. The biodiesel will 'dissolve' those deposits, and they will then be sent through the system, and ... gum it up. Just using 10%-20% should be okay for an old engine, and it will very gradually make the engine run cleaner.
Part of the refit to run 100% bio is new gaskets and seals. this stuff will desolve the crud in the spaces, and you'll lose compression.

the upgrade for vegetable oil is to add a heating system. Veg. oil is thicker than diesel, so it has to be heated up before it hits the engine.

10. Thanks, I'll pass this info along to the mister
We were going to try it while we were out of state on a recent trip but figured to see if there was something else we needed to know. I'm glad we waited.
