Dateline NBC on now. "To catch a predator" series.
They've already busted a firefighter and an evangelical college student for having explicit on-line convos with a supposed 15 year old and 13 year old.

Coming up after the commercial break, the men they bust are going to spout religion after they've been caught, I don't know whether to explain their perversions or to try to find sympathy for them.

Have y'all seen these shows? They use the Perverted Justice teams to lure the guys...don't know how to feel about that, because I think that those creeps from Perverted Justice are as weird as the people they bust.

But it's good that they're getting molestors off of the streets.

1. I'm watching. The firefighter/paramedic is from my county. He
works in Mechanicsburg, about 20 minutes from here. What a pervert!

11. seabeyond's post below got me to thinking...
Do you think that these Dateline shows might be a deterrant?

I don't know whether they are or not. Wondering what others think.

3. Yeah. I Was Watching That Earlier Tonight.
It's disturbing to hear their interviews afterwards so nochalant as if it isn't really their character or something.

Hey, sicko, you teach 6th grade and just went out of your way to meet a 13 yr old in hopes of having sex with her. Sick fuck.

4. I have no problems with them running these stings.
These people have problems and are really harming our youth. Maybe if they keep this up, the # of predators on the internet might decrease since these creeps know that that person on the other side of the computer might be a cop and really not a 13-year old girl.

6. This is so fucked up
I just keep shaking my head in horror and disbelief. I've never seen on of these shows before. Unbelievable. They must be so driven. Some of them have even seen shows like this. And there seems to be an endless supply of these perverts. Sheesh.

10. How does it feed the sickness?
Certainly, the sickness to which you refer is ephebophilia. So, how do these Dateline shows "feed the sickness?"

I wonder if it has the opposite effect that worries you--that it's actually a deterrant.

15. If the teacher was to believed, and I thought about it, I do believe that
watching previous shows titillated him and he never would have thought about doing what he did, without previously seeing it on tv.

Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 10:06 PM by mitchtv
He backed off at the last minute, and kept driving at the rendezvous. He says it was an adult chatroom and he assumed the "teen" was an adult lieing.. The crime ,apparently, was making the date.Funny, partner and I, thought he was one of the better ones(news personality). You just never know, I guess

13. this exploitation disgusts me . . . I understand law enforcement . . . .
pursuing child molesters, but to turn the whole thing into what has essentually become a TV series is just plain sick . . . apparently networks will do anything for a buck . . .

14. These "catch them in the act on camera" shows are vapid and pointless...
And the people who watch them probably have relatively nothing else going on in their lives but to watch this schlock. Methinks they are cut from the same cloth as accident gawkers.

I'm all for law enforcement setting up stings to nail these cretins.

I don't know about you, but I'm not comfortable with the media doing the job of law enforcement. I would think you would want the media to focus on their own fucking job, and how to do it better. God knows they have failed miserably at it the last several years.

17. TV is voyeurvision..24/7..
:puke:

There's very little on these days, and it irks me to realize all the good shows they did away with to save a few bucks. American Dreams was a wonderful show, and they axed it..and so many others I used to watch..

Now we have nothing but fake-reality shows, greedy, dumb game shows, and catchemintheact crime shows.. The stings themselves are GREAT.. I just don't think we "need" to see it...
