The MI3 "ingenious marketing plan" went seriously wrong at least 4,500 times in California! Please read on:

"MI3" Marketing Blowup

Mon May 1, 5:00 AM

Your mission, should you choose to accept it--make the newspapers go boom!

A Mission: Impossible III marketing scheme went haywire--literally--Friday when a Los Angeles Times reader in Santa Clarita mistook his friendly neighborhood newspaper rack for a device on the verge of spontaneous combustion.

In this day and age, you really can't blame the guy for being a bit concerned when he inserted his quarter, opened the lid and saw a small plastic box with a few wires poking out of it sitting on top of the papers.

He subsequently called the Los Angeles County sheriff's department at 9:05 a.m., according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Deputy Dana Camarillo, and the Canyon Country division's arson and explosives team was dispatched to investigate, arriving on the scene about 20 minutes later.

After spying the red plastic box, authorities proceeded to "render the device useless," Camarillo said. Or, to put it in more Mission: Impossible-friendly terms:

They blew that s@$% up!

As it turned out, that little sinister object was one of approximately 4,500 digital music players placed in L.A. Times dispensers throughout the city programmed to play the Mission: Impossible theme when the rack's door was opened.

Did you see "Top Gun"?

After that, it was downhill all the way?

Pissed at him about leaving Nicole Kidman -- Katie Holmes -- just generally or Scientologically?

24. Nope, None of his movies...
I've seen a few: "Risky Business", "Top Gun", "Eyes Wide Open" ...that may be it...

I think he always acts like, well, Tom Cruise -- a pompous little shit who thinks every one should fall all over him. Sorry, but there are many great actors out there; Cruise is just not one of them.

58. Thank you for that.
I used to think I was the only person who didn't like Tom Cruise. I've never understood why people go ga-ga over him. He's not that hot, he's not an especially gifted actor and it's becoming increasingly obvious that he's a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

I did like "Risky Business" and "Jerry McGuire", but it wasn't because of Cruise. They'd have still been good films with other actors taking over Cruise's roles. In fact, to me they'd have been even better.

Yes, I agree. He's not a very versatile actor. His performance is convincing, but the character is always the same. Consistent is a nice way to describe him.

His best movie was Rain Man, back in the late '80s.
Lately he's so annoying and weird, I predict his career trajectory will flatten.

I hated the first movie. Got dragged to the second (and hated it as well),
and have turned down an opportunity to see the third as someone's guest.

Other than the Lalo Schifrin music, the movies have nothing in common with the TV
show. The TV show was an intellectual exercise in outsmarting the bad guys. The
Steven Hill and Peter Graves were smart. The Tom Cruise character isn't smart, he's
just dumb and lucky!

If anything, the movies are like "Get Smart" without the laughs, and with bigger
explosions.

65. Here's a reviewer in Seattle who agrees with me on hand held camera!
This quote is from:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/movies/268894_mission04q.html

William Arnold in the Seattle Post Intelligencer:

"Like many filmmakers these days, first-time feature director J.J. Abrams (who created TV's "Lost" and "Alias," as well as Keri Russell's first star vehicle, "Felicity") tends to frame his scenes extremely tightly: More than three-fourths of the movie, and virtually all of the action, is shot in jerky close-up.

Some people like this because it makes the viewer a kind of participant in the combat.

I hate it: It's disorienting, it substantially diminishes the scale and it makes the film's $100 million worth of action sequences seem like just a dizzying blur."

Amen, brother!

No, I won't go see it. I see multiple movies a week thru the theater and netflix, but I've never seen a MI movie. Cruise does not interest me. The last thing he did that I appreciated was Risky Business. Vanilla Sky was wasted on him, the original Spanish movie (also with Penelope Cruz) was much better but the name escapes me.

Talentless
Phony
Zero Charisma
So far in the closet and in denial that he makes Rock Hudson look straight
The way he treated Nicole Kidman after the divorce
The Scientology Bullshit
He NEVER GOES AWAY
The conveniently planned life events that happen two weeks before a film opens
He is a homophobe
He is a misogynist
He is a Scientology
The massive Napoleon complex
The fact that he tries to convert crew members working on his films
"You don't know the history of Psychiatry, I do"
The professional beard that he CHOSE FROM A LIST
The fact that the professional beard is only being paid a mil a year--come on, she is being low-balled!

There is more, but I am tired. That said, I think he is insane and needs to be medicated, or he needs to hire Pat Kingsley so we do not see the real Tom.

Truly some of the piss-poorest examples of film making ever put onto celluloid. Pure gutwrenching awfulness. They weren't even bad in a good way - they were just laughably, awful, pathetically shitbaggishly bad.

And Tom Cruise's inability to act only enhanced the shit factor.

I think it's kind of funny when I see fundamentalists attacking Scientologists over their beliefs and threatening to boycott their movies, etc. What's the deal? Do they poll all actors on their religious views before they go to movies?

What's strange to me is that she is a member of a cultish Christian church whose practices are well outside of the mainstream. Whatever happened to live and let live? I wonder if it isn't just a kind of insecurity - people making themselves feel more normal by putting down a less powerful/popular group of people.

Like a DUer above, I wasn't impressed with the first one, didn't bother with the second (I think it's been on TV, and I didn't bother), so I won't go to see the third. The first had an annoyingly unbelievable plot without the style necessary to suspend disbelief and enjoy it.

Plus, they've massacred one of the great TV themes with a lousy orchestration. Their musical team ought to be shot.

you could not PAY me to sit through one of his films. (the critic on CBS Sunday morning reviewed the first MI movie, and basically said (and showed via film stills) that the movie was nothing more than tom cruise making faces. or, as a critic once said of an actress many years ago, "she runs the gamut of emotions from a to b".

His recent wacko behavior is a real turn-off as well as his attempts to stiffle free speech (getting that South Park episode that made fun of him pulled from the air). The last Cruise movie I saw was WOTW which wasn't terrible but not exactly anything all that memorable or special either.

I'm not going to contribute to feeding his oversized ego.

40. All Tom Cruise movies are exactly the same
Act 1: Tom Cruise's character is a snotty, self-centered reckless punk.

Act 2: Something terrible happens. Usually it's his fault.

Act 3: The something terrible motivates him to get his shit together. He comes out the hero at the end.

Tom Cruise either makes this movie and it's successful, or the grosses from the movie include the nineteen dollars and forty-three cents the ushers dig out of the seat cushions. Tom Cruise movies are expensive, so their directors tend to stick to the formula that actually works.

51. I'd rather eat glass
I don't think he's a very good actor. Side note:
my mom and dad were in "Born on the Fourth of July".
Dad was a veteran in the parade and mom was watching
the parade.

52. Off to the preview. I'll post a review after the movie opens 5/05/06!

Many of the folks who have seen previews around the world -- say the movie is pretty good. At least, on the Internet Database at www.imdb.com

Oh, well -- it's a (volunteer) job, and somebody (?) has to do it!

In peace,

54. I'm always suspicious of posts about new films...
Folks at "viral marketing agencies" are paid to go onto boards like this and talk up new movies...generate word of mouth and excitement among "opinion leaders" like us DUers. I've seen it a lot on DU, expect more this summer. Nice poster by the way!

57. UPDATE: I've seen the movie and it wasn't that great --- nobody paid me.
I'll post a review as soon as I get my own thoughts together.

64. No problem, WinkyDink -- does that come from the refrain:
Edited on Wed May-03-06 06:23 PM by Radio_Lady
"Winky Dink and you
Winky Dink and me -- "

Are you old enough to remember it?

http://www.toontracker.com/winky/winky.htm

Winky Dink And You began on CBS-TV on October 10, 1953 and ran through April 27, 1957. It was hosted by Jack Barry, who had also hosted Juvenile Jury and other early game shows and went on to host Joker's Wild. He was joined on Winky Dink by Dayton Allen, who portrayed his incompetent assistant Mr. Bungle. The Winky Dink program and character was created and co-owned by Harry W. Prichett, Sr. and Edwin Brit Wyckoff, and was a Barry/Enright/Friendly Production in association with CBS-TV.

Winky Dink was an animated character, voiced by Mae Questal (Olive Oyl), accompanied by his dog Woofer (voiced by Dayton Allen). Each episode featured the youngster winding up in trouble, and requiring a vital object to assist in his escape. Host Jack Barry would ask the viewers to get out their Winky Dink Kits, which included 5 crayons and a clear sheet of plastic. They were told to put the plastic sheet over their television screen and draw in the life-saving prop, using the crayon provided. The ingenious gimmick of this show was also a very profitable merchandising scheme. Young viewers were urged to get their own Winky Dink Kit by sending 50 cents to 'Winky Dink, Box 5, New York 19 N.Y.'.
