What about this? Alito received Exxon-Mobil stock worth possibly $250,000
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 12:59 PM by Clara T
But what about this?
Alito received the Exxon-Mobil stock, which could be worth as much as $250,000, as a bequest in May 2004. His disclosure form did not provide the source of the bequest, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
I want to know WHO "bequested" a quarter-million dollars worth of Exxon-Mobil stock to Alito and I want to know WHY. These are legitimate questions for a Supreme Court nominee. We'll accept no bullshit obfuscation from the White House on this front - "a nominee's personal finances are exactly that - personal..."

If I were headed for a high-profile job and somebody GAVE me $250,000 I'd feel obligated to let the public know the circumstances surrounding that award.

Let's not let this one slip through the cracks.

"Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito has more than $615,000 in assets, including stock in Exxon Mobil Corp. worth more than $100,000, according to his 2004 financial disclosure statement.
Alito received the Exxon-Mobil stock, which could be worth as much as $250,000, as a bequest in May 2004.

4. Alito's 2004 inheritance of Exxon-Mobil stock
According to previous financial disclosures reported last month by the Associated Press, the Exxon Mobil stock was a bequest from a family friend.

Maybe it's a commentary on my family, but we don't have any friends that would bequeath us $161,000 in Exxon-Mobil stock. (Do you?) In fact, we don't even have any friends who use the word "bequeath."
We wrote about Alito's 2004 inheritance of Exxon-Mobil stock on the day he was nominated (although the exact $161,000 amount was revealed in late November, and buried in stories about his 1985 abortion memo disclosed in the same questionaire.)
We thought that more details -- who this mysterious family friend was, and why he would leave such a large amount to a "family friend" and not to someone from his own family, or his beloved cocker spaniel -- would emerge between then and the hearings.

We were wrong, of course.

If Sam Alito were some ordinary Joe, he'd be entitled to some privacy on this matter. But he's not -- he's a nominee to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Privacy is a right, but serving on the High Court is a privilege, and if Alito wants that privilege, then he should be required to tell who left him such a large stake in the world's largest oil company, and why.

After all, the chance that Alito will not be asked to rule on something that impacts Exxon-Mobil is completely nil. Even if Exxon-Mobil is not a direct party to any matters (in which case we'd hope that Alito would recuse himself), the mega-conglomerate is impacted by environmental laws, by restrictions on campaign contributions, or by court cases affecting the ability to wage war in the Middle East, where most of the world's oil is located.

7. I heard $161,000 on the day he was nominated. Sent it to KO. Here are
links:

A family friend gives him $161,000 on the day he was nominated?  Please cover this story!

In his questionnaire, Alito provided new details about his financial holdings, including that he owns $161,000 of Exxon Mobil Corp. stock. Altogether, Alito estimated his net worth at $2.1 million, of which $870,000 is in real estate, $789,000 in stocks and mutual funds, $244,000 in cash and $60,000 in federal Series EE bonds.

According to previous financial disclosures reported last month by the Associated Press, the Exxon Mobil stock was a bequest from a family friend.

I don't think that's what the paragraph said.

I believe it said that pnionline *wrote* about it on the day he was nominated, not that the bequest was made on the day he was nominated.

That's an important difference.

It's also important to know who the bequest was from.

11. Jeez, Kennedy was hammered down by Specter asking for docs
that EVERYONE should have had access to and were on file in archives of Reagan admin. What are buried in those Reagan yr docs ? Could it be info on sign-offs on stuff like Ollie North et al's 'suspension of the Constitution' projects ? No wonder the R's throw a hissyfit over this material...

12. CAP
As you may have heard, Alito boasted of his membership in the CAP group in a 1985 application seeking a job in the Reagan administration. That set off some alarm bells back at Princeton, because CAP had been quite a controversial group. The first issue of its magazine, Prospect, published just after Alito graduated, contained articles bashing the growing number of blacks and women on campus, and CAP would later publish even more strident material against gays and others.

15. My interest is piqued by his Reagan era background
and potential approvals of Ollie North et al's 'suspension of Constitution' plans, etc.

This guy will say and do whatever it takes to screw the Constitution, not uphold protect defend it. The Bill of (Corporate) Rights is his subterfuge.

Dems must learn to say along with Nancy Reagan 'Just Say NO !'

Is it too late to send this question off?

If not I'll do so immediately.

Is Kennedy going to ask more questions?
