I'm sorry, but the Alito hearings are a JOKE
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 01:46 PM by SoCalDem
MOST hearings are a joke. There are few real "questions" and even fewer answers.

Hearings are little more than a way for the pompous senators (and sometimes congresspeople) to pontificate and spout platitudes on one side and sling veiled (and not so veiled) insults on the other.

Since we cannot count on the media to see under the radar and tell a little truth on the half-shell, and put the hearings into context, it's just a small respite from the daily buffoonery of the press and government business.

Does ANYONE really think that he will not be confirmed, due to something that "comes out at the hearings"?..Nope.. He will be confirmed, just as Roberts was.

These hearings should be being framed by the media as a REASON why secure and honest elections are so necessary. They should be using this as a teaching moment to educate the people about the consequences of "elections".

For the viewers to believe that little *² won fair & square it would reinforce their beliefs and for the other 50%, it would drive home the message that this stuff should be taught better in schools.

I issue a challenge to anyone who wants to undertake it:

Ask 10 non-political people the following questions and weep when you hear their answers:

1. How many supreme court justices are there?
2. How many times can they run for office? (trick question)
3. Who decides when to hold hearings?
4. Who are your senators?
5. How many representatives does your state have?
6. Is your secretary of state a Republican or democrat?
7. Where were the WTC suicide pilots from?
8. Who is the Chief Justice of the supreme court?
9. Do you read a newspaper every day? The whole paper?
10.Do you watch the news on TV? What channel is your favorite?

Bonus questions:

1. Who is linked with Brad Pitt these days?
2. What night does "Lost" come on?
3. Name the "Desperate Housewives".
4. How many "CSI"s are there?
5. Who won the World Series last year?

3. The average American could answer
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 01:52 PM by LibDemAlways
at least three of the bonus questions and only the newspaper and tv news questions in the first set. Unfortunately, the answer to Question 9 would more than likely be "I read the sports section" or "I read the comics." As for Question 10, most would say, "I watch tv news once in a while and I'm not sure what channel." Too many faithful news junkies would, unfortunately say, "I do watch tv news on FOX."

4. I Totally Disagree...Yes They Have Had Failings...
but if you watch and listen carefully, the information you need is coming out of the hearings...

Alito will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade
Alito is dishonest
Alito believes the President has unlimited powers in wartime
Alito will say anything to get a job or in this case, be confirmed

6. You have just made MY point.
No matter how "impordant" the hearings are supposed to be, he WILL be confirmed,. and yes..he will work to do all the things you say he will, and MOST people will never even hear about it.

The judge-picking part of our government is a complete secret as far as most people are concerned, and MOST people don't even care about it..

The hearings are just a temporary respite from the "missing white girl of the moment" or "who's dating Angelina today" news.

If it came out in the hearings that Alito "killed a guy in Reno, just to watch him die", the republican 'questioners' would spin it as self-defense and confirm him anyway..and the media would spin the "democrat senators" as obstructionists for even bringing it up..:puke:

When the press let us all down in November, by not really investigating yet another scummy election, they "elected" Alito and Roberts even though they were not even on the ballot:(

I hate millionaire sports, I don't watch TV.

However even I have read somewhere that Brad Pitt is probably going to be a daddy -- oh -- when I read one of the online newspapers -- that was a headline on the homepage.

9. Not all jokes are funny...I know of at least a brazillion "not funny" ones
The only reason that watergate 'went anywhere" was that it was not relegated to c-span (pre-cspan days) it was on REGULAR TV and people could not avoid watching it. We were schooled by it. At first no one paid attention, but gradually people caugh on and started watching.

C-span, as good as it is/was, offers a "safe" place to hold these hearings, because not all that many people will even watch.

The rest of the public (95%?) are 'spared' the tedious details..:(

11. our political institutions have been 95% coopted or outright purchased
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 02:09 PM by leftofthedial
by corporations. As Frank Zappa said, "Government is the Entertainment Division of the military-industrial complex."

these "hearings" are merely the hollow pantomime of rituals that have long since lost any meaning. they are not intended to find any kind of "truth." They are conducted so that after the fact, the choices made by our rulers appear to be legitimized by a "process."

14. Oooh...oooo...
...I know, I know...

1) Angelina Jolie
2) Wed
3) Brie, Gabriel, Susan, Lynette and sometimes Edie, but she doesn't really count
4) three
5) um...crap, don't know that one

:)

Sorry. Yes, it's pretty sad, but that's how people have been conditioned. The politicians of today, for the most part, specialize in obfuscation, with a cadre of advisors teaching them how to say much but mean nothing. A well informed citizenry is not in their interests.
