Calling him rude and inappropriate won't work, either.

Keep whining about Colbert. Keep that video kicked to the top of the "most popular" videoblog sites.

1. Colbert is a genius.
That was a "have you no decency" moment that will live on in history.

2. I file "lying a nation into war" under "rude and inappropriate"
But standards often vary from person to person.

5. Well,
comparing him to Joe Welch at the hearing?

Uh, gee, that's interesting. I remember Joe Welch making that statement, and watching the whole thing begin to fall apart on McCarthy, but Colbert did a routine in a different venue. I'd like to think that it'll show up in the history books, but I won't be around to see it.

I hope so, though. I hope so.

7. Ya never know...some history hits the books fast, like Nixon resigning
That stuff made it into the books almost immediately.

If the press starts doing its' job, this will be the seminal moment.

We can only hope!

15. I remember Welch too and his famous put-down.
I watched the Army-McCarthy hearings live and almost in their entirety because I was at home with the flu for a week or so. (I was deemed to be contagious). Later was delighted to see Mr. Welch play a judge in Anatomy of a Murder.

24. Did you know that
in the 1970s, when I was in law school in Chicago, someone took the transcripts of the McCarthy hearings and boiled them down into a play down in the Rush-Oak area - sort of a theater area at that time?

We went, and the Welch speech was so captivating, the audience rose up and went nuts, stopping the show for almost fifteen minutes.

It was during Watergate.

Welch was a great man.

26. Interesting! I can see how that would be effective.
It plays back in my mind as something of a docudrama when I recall watching it with my New Deal Democratic grandmother who contributed some acerbic analysis! We could use another Welch now. One of those people who are NOT replaceable.

12. I agree
Based on his diverse body of work these last few years, I am very impressed -- indeed, astonished and awed -- at his talent. He is a remarkable man. In his performances, there is an element of genius. You just can't hide it or deny it. He is not only an intelligent, incisive wit, but he is an extraordinary physical comic. I am a long time fan of the comic master Charlie Chaplin -- and I think Colbert may well reach his level of achievement. Charlie would be proud of this boy. And I think Jon Stewart is also in awe of the talent of this man -- he's proud to show him off.

Colbert is SO multifaceted that he could have given any number of types of performances in this venue. But he chose to confront the Monkey King and his adoring lapdogs when he had his chance.

Which is what Charlie would have done, brilliantly. Charlie was eventually intimidated into fleeing Americq -- this is how America treats its Court Jesters.

20. very very unusual....
to have a comedian that can be so cerebral and so disciplined in maintaining his own character and restraining his own emotional reactions--while at the same time, able to do physical comedy. Admittedly, I'm more entralled at the former, rather than the latter type of comedy (maybe what they say about women and the Three Stooges is somewhat correct). But, I can appreciate both done well and Colbert certainly fits that bill.

But as one fascinated by human behavior and reactions, the fact that Colbert could maintain his crisply delivered routine, despite the increasing anger/antagonism by the nearby pResident of the US and a room full of "prestigious" media, while looking them ALL directly in the eye, just simply fascinates me. If that doesn't convince anyone that Colbert was driven by his convictions and that this was HIS Jon Stewart Crossfire moment (exponentially magified), well, I'd urge you to watch about 20 more times!

While they were introducing him and he was still in his seat he was shuffling his note cards and I could see he was nervous. Now I know why!

28. I think the power of Colbert's speech is that he put into one
blistering speech (with Bush and the elite a captive audience) all the things most of us have been saying for years. It was easy to ignore us rabble, but not so easy with Colbert's high-profile appearance.

9. It wasn't the insult to the president...
It was SC calling attention to the lack of professional integrity on the part of the national press that upset the news readers and stenographers passing as "journalists"....

16. also the socialites and trust fund babies and other
privileged poseurs who inherit their Beltway status. They didn't like Colbert one bit. They looked and acted like the courtiers in some old flick about French monarchs. Or, someone, said like the Russian aristocrats dining in elegant surroundings as the hunger marchers outside were ridden down by the Orenburg Cossacks.

17. Remember to say Thank You!!!!
http://thankyoustephencolbert.org/

Count is up to 41,800 or so. But that's a long way from 1 million.

So e-mail the thank you site to your friends. It has the videos linked on the thank you site so your peeps can watch Mr. C's performance if they haven't already seen it.

One stop shopping-- and thanking!

18. The forces of evil are following Ghandi's script at RECORD speed!
""First they ignore you, then they ridicule you,
then they fight you, then you win."
Ghandi

Isn't this EXACTLY what we are seeing?

IGNORE:
The MSM spent a few days trying to pretend it never happened;
a real old-fashioned Soviet-style media blackout.

RIDICULE:
For the last two days, the talking point has been "He wasn't funny,
he did a poor job, no one enjoyed him."

FIGHT:
We are now seeing the first stirrings of this stage.

While most of the MSM are still working on the 'ridicule',
we have begun to see the first of them who are attempting to
'call him to task': He was "rude", he was "over the line", etc...

WIN:
Just a matter of time, and probably not much time at this rate.

The only REAL question is, how do we define "win" in a situation like this?

I think it will be when the first mainstream op-ed writer
is bold enough to print what Colbert REALLY did:
state some very uncomfortable TRUTHS that everyone already knew
but was afraid to talk about.

22. Obviously, Colbert hit a home run
because as much as the press would like to ignore this story, they can't. The story just keeps getting bigger and bigger has more people find out.

Thank Gore for the Internet, because this video would have been run on C-SPAN and then only clips of it would have been seen in the M$M. Most people would have never known what really happened. But now at the click of a button most people have immediate access to the actual event. Has a result, the M$M lies neutered in a pile of their own stinking shit.

Colbert stuck the knife in and twisted it.

We're still watching their painful reactions to it. :)
